Hi all,

today I've changed the rear light units on my Conway Cruiser FC, I bought some new trailer lights from a seller on ebay, and although they seem a bit cheap and nasty, they look a whole lot better than the cracked ones which they have replaced, and they worked too... for a short while.

I put the first side on, checked it and fixed the box to the camper, then I did the other side. Once I had fixed the 2nd side, I hooked it all up to check it out, only to find that the nearside indicator was now not working (I did this side 1st and it worked fine before I did the offside). I've gone over everything 3 or 4 times and everything I've done seems fine, so now I feel like I should investigate further.

Can access be gained to behind the rear panel of the camper from inside ? I reckon if I could get in there, I will find the answer to my problem. I am booked on the ferry at Dover next weekend, so need to get this done pronto !!!

As usual, all replies received with gratitude. Many thanks, Russ

Hi Mate, check out that you have a good earth as they are more than likely linked from one to the other and you may have disturbed it.

Thanks, that was the 1st thing I've checked... then I checked it twice more. The unit is definately earthed properly as all the othe functions work fine on it.

One thing I'm wondering about is, I've changed  5 function light units for 4 function units, there were fog lights on the old units. The wires for the fog light terminals I've simply taped them so no wire is showing, and taped them to another wire in case I want them in the future. I still dont see how it can be that. My F.I.L is going to have a look for me today, before I seek out an auto spark.

Help, advice, opinions and info still much appreciated, Russ

have a look at the plug connector and make sure that all the wires / screw terminal are free from moisture and no rust.

just had a problem when brake and sidelights used together they all went off. i bought a new socket for the car (just incase) and rewired the trailer plug. the brake contact was full of rust!

and a bad earth will also cause problems

I've been working on this all day (no fun with a bad back), I've since discovered that the problem is not with the electrics on the camper at all.... it is a problem with the car side off things.

When I plug the trailer electrics socket into the car outlet, it does everything it should do, except flash the nearside indicator on the trailer. I took it to a trailer/towbar specialist this afternoon, who tested it first with a board (this showed the same results as me hitching my trailer... no nearside indicator), he then used a multimeter and the readings said that there was power to it, the car even makes the beeping noise that its supposed to make when the car is connected to a trailer and indicators/hazards are being used.

5 days till we are due to go, am getting nervous as I've been planning this for 10 months... thoughts please anyone ???

Russ

Do you have a wiring diagram for the socket? Try http://www.western-towing.co.uk/acatalog/Trailer_12N_wiring_diagram.html. It sounds like you dont have any power going down to the car socket from the yellow wire. You could try looking at the back of the cars light cluster(nearside) find the yellow wire. It may be the scotch lock(blue clip) giving a bad connection. They are only cheap to replace at any motor factors. It would help if you had a cheap multimeter so you can check for 12v dc on pins 1 and 3. Good luck.
