Hi,

I am looking into buying a Trailer Tent and looking on these forums I have noticed a lot of chat about Folding Campers.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is and why one may suit me more than the other?

I am a single dad with two children 8 & 5 so will be doing the lions share of putting it up etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have got to get rid of your blue face with this quick answer. The major difference is with the main cabin, with  TT the canvas goes down to the floor and needs to be pegged out, with a FC the canvas clips under the bed boards making it both quicker and easier to set up. The awning on both is virtualy the same. Other differences are that on most FC's the kitchen is a fixture in the main cabin while on TT's it would usually stand in the awning, this tends to make it easier to use the FC with the cabin only, however it is also in the cabin when you have the awning up. In most FC's you have slightly more floor space in the cabin area compared to most TT's.

These are only generalisations and you should compare different units both on the web and at camp shops. I would have thought that as it will mainly just be you and two children a FC would be easiest but only you will know what you can manage.

A trailer tent is basically a frame tent which opens out from inside the trailer and needs to be pegged down like a normal tent. This main cabin forms your sleeping area with a double bed on each side - unless you want to live completely outdoors and risk getting wet in the process you will need to erect the awning, which will also have to be pegged down, this will be your kitchen/ living space.

A folding camper is very similar but when you open it out the sides are self-supporting and don't need to be pegged down. Everything is inside the main unit so you don't need to attatch an awning, though you can if you wish (though these cost extra and are quite expensive. Also it doesn't take as long as a tt to set up.

As you are on your own with two quite young children who wouldn't be able to help much then a folding camper would probably be the best option for you.

 Just to confuse you more I have a camplet which is class as a folding camper but is really a trailer tent ..... lots of space not much pegging & very easy to put up !! check them out ... well worth a look .... but then so are the combi-camps .... so much choice !!
