Firstly you don't need to take an additional test to tow over 750kg - please look at the stickies on the towing forum...

Essentially with anything suitable for towing by the Megane CC you'll be alright.

Secondly, I should think you'd be OK towing up to 1000kg without too many problems - you might not want to go through alpine passes but otherwise should be OK! In the past we towed large caravans with 1500cc cars that were half as powerful as your Renault, and still managed 60mph. Cmapers generally are better than caravans anyway as they have less wind resistance. Incidentally as mentionad above 85% of kerb weight is a good guide as a limit - in your case if my data is correct that's 998kg!

(I tow a Conway Cardinal Clubman with a 1.6 diesel Citoren Xsara Picasso - not problems and 41.5mpg towing!)

Your probably ok with a diesel, as you say torque is the important thing, I have a Toyota Avensis 2.0D4D company car which would be great for towing as it has buckets of torque but we're not allowed to take company cars out of the country so I have to go with out other car the 1.6 petrol.

Don't forget it should be no more than 85% of your vechicle kerb weight.

as you say torque is the important thingwhat do you mean by this?i think i may know what your on about

Torque is the rotational twisting force the engine applies to the crankshaft, the horsepower is then worked out by mutiplying the RPM with the torque. Diesels are good as they have more torque at lower RPM.

Yes I discovered that I could tow over 750kg a few weeks ago whilst looking on the towing forum, can't believe its that unclear on the DVLA, I had always assumed 750KG was the limit.

But now I can tow more weight I am considering a lightweight caravan, going to the NEC in october to have a good look at whats on offer and the pro's and con's.

Normally just a case of remapping the engine managment computer (plug a laptop in and hey presto) if you know how to of course, you can get your 130bhp turbo diesel remappaed to 190bhp without and real drawbacks, according to some websites, manufacturers deliberately under tune Diesels otherwise they would all out perform the petrol models in performance and MPG, and they would sell even less petrol cars.

Plus they can charge you £1000 extra for more BHP, better off buying the low power model and get a tuning company to redo the engine managment.

Following on from my earlier post on this thread, we now have our Pathfinder, and even though I've only done one 'tug', ie the trip home from Gosport to Oxford, I can say that the Rover 45TDi pulls it great. At 60 in top the turbo has just come in and the power has kicked in nicely. Hit a hill, and in advance toe down and she sails up the hill in top. Anyone who knows the A34 from the M3 up to Oxford will know there are some good test hills on the way. Well pleased. A check on the mpg on the next fill, which included the 85 mile tow and about 300-plus miles of at least 70mph yielded 49mpg, thus I reckon towing mpg up to allowable max speed should be about 43-45. My brother-in-law gets 40mpg towing a large caravan with his 05 reg Mondy estate for a comparison. Years ago, brisk towing with a Renault 20TS and Sprite Musketeer used to give us just under 30mpg. Later our Cav SRI used to give about the same pulling a Mardon Classique. But for ease of towing, for us it will be an FC now. Also impressive is the interior size - it is as big as both of our 'vans were. Each to their own, but we are converted.

Best of luck Mark with your search.

As a general rule I would say you need 100hp per 1000kg. I tow a Pennine Sterling which fully laden must be just over 1000kg & I tow with a 90hp Peugeot 405 Estate with 135'000 on the clock. On a recent trip to south Devon some of the hills on the A38 caused me to change down as low as 3rd but still 50mph at 3000 rpm I usually cruise at the legal 60mph on motorways at 2250rpm & still get 45mpg.As regards toilet we use one in an inner tent in the awning but if it gets cold in the night it goes in the doorway.Hope this gives you some help

I used to tow a Conway Cardinal Clubman with my 1.4 petrol Jazz, no real problems, went up Wenlock Edge OK.
