Hey, this is my first year camping and i love it so much i can't bear heading into the winter with the thought of not getting away so i'm just wondering, if its possible to camp in the winter either with a trailer tent or just a tent.  Have Electric hookup so taking a heater is no probs and obvioulsy more clothes and heavier sleeping bags etc.  Have a conway olympia and would love to go away in it during the winter but not sure about the dampness and the canvas.......also have an old reliable tent that has seen me through many wet and windy weekends and would go away in that if trailer tent not possible, but will people just hink i'm mad???

canvas wont be a problem we've had it frozen solid so long as you dont beat it with a stick and let it thaw naturally its fine,a fan heater will provide air circulation but you will get condensation just because theres a difference in temperature inside than out which applies all the year round.
frosts tend to dry the air though outside

I've never thought about camping in the winter before. I'm not too sure if i'd like it or not! When we was in Devon a few weeks ago, the first week was lovely and warm, in our old tent (vango diablo 600xp), but when it came to our second week, it came in damp and cold in the night. Obviously, it wasn't as cold as what the winter months would be, but i struggled to keep warm under over large duvet! I am one that can put up with the chill quite well, but when the cold comes in on an evening, and i'm not warm in bed, i don't sleep well! So each to there own, but i'm not sure you would catch me camping in the middle of winter!! I like my snuggly bed to much!! I can imagine the condensation that would build up, and the frost not doing the tent too much good. Plus, you'll have to find a way of ensuring the tent is fully dry, before packing it away. Now that could be quite difficult!!

You must let us know whether you'll venture out in the middle of winter and camp. Let us all know what it's like, and wether maybe more people should do it!!

Hope you have plenty of thermals!! Happy camping!!

Mmmm, maybe not right in the middle of winter, not yet anyway!  Maybe just leading up to the winter late sept/oct, although i think winter is already here!  I was hoping to get alot more use out of TT before the year was out, the weather has been awful everytime we go away in it, wet and windy!!!

We will be going away october half term in f/c ...not been so late before but have been early april and got great weather!!!(much better than summer actually) .I think that early autumn is usually relatively dry (especially when you compare recent weather) but if you have the space to set up once home and put a heater in to ensure dryness then you shouldn't have any problems.

We have only managed 1 trip out this summer so like you don't want to see the season end...we will keep going too if the oct trip is a success...I think there are many people who camp all year , it's just knowing what gear to take and what to be sure of when you get back. You will prob get better hols anyway cos the madding crowds won't be there!!!

If its really cold you may have to switch to propane rather than butane gas.

As sueandjohn said make sure your equipment is rated for the colder temps. Nothing worse than a sleeping bag that doesnt keep you warm.

Electric blankets and you will be as warm as toast. Just look on the pennine owners forum to see us lot out at easter in snow and minus four degrees.

A few years ago we went to Beddgellert in Febuary and we were amazed by how many campers (under canvas) were braving the elements.(it was the half-term) It was strange to see dome tents with snow on, looked like igloos!
October half term hols will be our latest in the TT, although I quite fancy New-Year, with a good heater!

Funny that you saying about New Year, had considered going away over christmas in mine to get away from all the family stresses!  I am definatly going to try and get away within the next couple of weeks, once the awning comes back from getting the window repaired.......

Not sure how cold it will be, sure it will be all cosy anyway, must get some leccy blankets though as suggested!

Will let yous know how it all goes!

We had snow in our first trip out in the camper in early April.  Woke up on Sunday morning to find snow all over the top which had gone icy.  It was really cold during the night and the snow made packing away a long process as we had to knock all the snow off and then wait a bit for it to dry off a little.  Fortunately it was sunny!!

We are trying half term away in October if the weather is fairly reasonable before hand.

There have been a few posts on here about going away at New Year which has got me thinking......

Given the weather we had a week or so ago at Ilfracombe, I wonder if it would be even that bad in winter!  Certainly we may go October half term...I would rather be in the TT though, ours stood up SO well to the rain and wind -
