Hello, not really sure where to put this but hope someone can help.  We have a Pennine Sterling FC 93'.  When we were coming away from our last break at Long Beach Great Yarmouth (lovely place) i had a problem with one of the camper wheels locking the brake on.  These are not braked (i assume) and it was only straight after we were pulling away from the site and when i braked hard at very slow speeds to test the brakes.  It seemed that there was a 'clonk' and the one wheel locked and started skidding along.  It would then release itself and lock up again when breaking hard for the next few times i tried it.  We went onto a field to have a luck and found for an unknown reason it had stopped doing it so we were ok to travel home and didn't get the problem after that.   Does anyone have any idea why it could have done this?  My initial thought is that the handbrake on the FC is set too close as it only takes 2 clicks and it locks the brakes completely.

Any help would be most appreciated as i want to get it sorted before we go away in October.

It sounds like a braked trailer to me however on the rear of the wheel hubs you should find the brake arm/cable spring, you will need to remove the road wheel and strip the brake assembly and grease it up (not the shoes). If it is not  the brakes then I would say the wheel bearing has probably gone dry and is on its way out, you could strip and pack it again with grease but probably easier/cheaper unless you are mechanically minded to get a new bearing assembly.

I would imagine that what you say about the handbrake indicates that it is the brake assembly that needs to be stripped and greased

Not a hard job to do just remember where you take each part from, use a digital camera at each stage to record what you do in case you forget where something has come from.

Hope this helps/makes sense to you

Previous correspondent thinks that it IS braked and I concur. If you have a handbrake, then your FC IS braked. (All trailers over 750kg need to be braked anyway)

All recent vans/FCs have quite a clever mechanism in the hubs that releases the brakes when reversing, sometimes this needs lubricating.

If the problem ocurred on one side only, in addition to checking hubs as described above, also check that the Bowden Cables are OK and evenly adjusted both sides. (These pull the brakes on)

It is straight forward, as suggested, but only you have a basic familarity. A little known fact is the there is a Haynes Manual for caravans. (Not by individual model but generic) and it is very good on the subject of brake servicing.

If you are unsure, best to get your FC checked out professionally before you use it again.

Hope this helps.

P.S. You mention "...braked hard..." twice. Generally not a good idea to do this. A well adjusted system will come on progressively and proportionally with all normal braking situations.
