We've been down the tent road followed by a caravan then back to tent When I was in ther tent I wanted a caravan for winter trips and a comfier bed. When I was in the caravan I used to gaze longingly at the tents and felt I wasn't really camping!!!!!

What I really fancy now is either a Combicamp, Comanche Montana or a Dandy. I have actually wanted a Dandy for years but up till now couldn't afford a new one but I've noticed some people saying Riva went bust and you can't get a new one now???

Anyway, I need something that can sleep 2 adults and a 12 year old who is as tall as an adult......must be something in the water

Can anyone help?

Lesley

You can't get a new Dandy so if it's new you're after that narrows down your choices.

Love our Dandy and could go on about it for ever but couldn't give you an opinion on your other 2 choices. We've not long had our Dandy Destiny aka 'Doodle' but wouldn't be without him now, there's a thread following our hunt for one somewhere that goes on for pages so that may be of some use to you.

I think you have to look at them all in the flesh and decide which is best for you really as only you can decide which one would suit you better.

Good luck!

Andi

Like you we went from tent to caravan and somewhere in the mix we have had a Raclet Quickstop. We now have a Dandy Designer and its ideal for myself, husband and (when he comes with us) son who is 6ft 3ins and weighs lots!
The Quickstop was lovely - a joy to put up, warm, stable and draft free. The only downside was getting it dry when we got home because we dont have anywhere near our house to open it out to dry.
For us the Dandy ticks all our boxes (I dont know why I said that, I really hate that phrase!) We can pack it away wet with no ill effects, dont have to spend the next couple of days running backwards and forwards to the garage to open it out to get it dry, we get more mpg when towing than we did the caravan and its far warmer than the caravan ever was.
Riva arent making any new units at the moment but I understand they still do repairs and supply any bits you may need to "do it yourself". Also I have heard that they are hoping to go into production again with one of their smaller units next year.

In fact the only problem I find with the Dandy is describing it to Site Wardens when booking a pitch over the phone. Is it a folding caravan, folding camper or trailer tent? I really dont know - I just tend to use the description that they seem most comfortable with.

Hope this helps

Hi Lesley, know exactly what you mean, we liked our tents but wanted a big comfortable bed that was off the ground and a built in kitchen. After a lot of research we bought a combi camp venezia demo model off Siggi with the king size slatted bed, rear annexe, porch awning plus a sun awning. You can get a different bed arrangement instead of the king size but we went for ours as our grandson would only be with us infrequently. We have had caravanners comment at the space and are amazed at the comfort & you feel you are still camping not living in a white box.

Hope this helps,

John & Julie

Have you looked at the Pennines, everything a caravan has in ,easy to tow and really roomy and you're still under canvas.Prices vary considerably depending on year and model, well worth a look.Cheers John.

Thanks to everyone who replied - all really helpfull.  I am going to have to look about now for stockists but I dont think there are that many here in central Scotland.....this may call for a weekend away.........Oh no

If I'm set on a Dandy then I guess I'll have to look on ebay, papers, preloved - anywhere else?

Oh my, I'm getting all excited at the thought of it all.  Might need to wait till after Christmas so I have some money lol

Have a look at the Camplet-Concorde    2 large double bedrooms, acres of space, very low and light for towing.

We've also just been through the same exercise about what to buy and have settled on a second hand Dandy. In the end it came down to having nowhere suitable to peg out canvas to dry it. You also need to consider the time element if you're going to be a weekend camper who works full time - are you really going to want to re-erect a wet tent when you get home on a Sunday evening?

I think some of the manufacturers are using acrylic fabrics which are more suited to our wet climate - not sure how they fare if folded wet though.
