Thomsons is fine for canvas. So is Travis Perkins Water Seal. If anything they're better than Fabseal - 'cos they're cheaper, people aren't tempted to skimp or miss bits that aren't so leaky.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
We used the thompsons waterseal on our FC canvas and it never let us down. We gave it a couple of thinner layers than a heavy layer. I bought a cheap garden pump sprayer and used that to spray most of it and a small brush for some of the bits near the windows and down by the joint onto the trailer body. I think there is a certain snobbery about it though as it isn't marketed for tents like the fabsil is. Although the fabsil is over twice the price.
At the end of the day it is all down to personal preference.

do you spray the canvas inside or outside?or both, sorry to sound so dim
This was our method. We opened up the camper partially so we could get at the roof without ladders and sprayed it in sections so we knew were we'd done. We sprayed it till it was wet but not saturated. We then put it up properly so it dried at the correct tension so the canvas didn't shrink. Then worked on the sides and ends. I stuck paper over the windows and then used the brush to do the edges. I did this a few times over a couple of weeks just so I knew I'd covered it all without missing bits. Didn't want to be dripped on when we were away.
It is quite smelly so it is best to give it a couple of good airings after to make the smell go. And don't do it on a windy day or you'll never be the same in the shower again!!!
cheers.i only asked cos when it rained hard last summer,we had fine sprays of water coming down on us in the awning thats the only parti want to cover. The main unit canvas is only a few yrs old so we should be ok for a while with that
Hi just to let you know that the new thompsons water seal is no longer any use to us campers as it is now water based and does not waterproof the canvass i contacted water seal and they informed me of this, however Wicks own water seal just as good we have just proofed two trailer tents
Just to add, from Jan 2010 all paint and paint products will be water based. There will be no oil based paints. This is a health and safety directive from the powers that be in Brussels.

an email from fabsil ensured me (not that i use their over priced fluid) is that fabsil not being a paint is not involved in the new directive ,thomsons falls down in that it is a "paint" thats used on canvas as well as other things
