Can anyone help, i've been offered a Coleman folding camper it is the type that winds up and thats where the problem begins! It won't wind up has anyone ever encountered this problem before? If so is it an easy fix? They only want a token amount for it so if all else fails and it turns out to be a shed when it was opened then i would have a good trailer that said i bought an old trailer tent off ebay some years ago and had some good times in it so if its fixable then i'd like to give it a go. Any advise would be great.

The biggest problem is the lack of spares in this country - you'd possibly have to get things from the States.

There's a bit of info on the mechanism here...

http://www.customcylindersintinc.com/camper_trailer_roof_lift_system.htm

A Google search would provide more!

It looks as if the problem may be quite simple, e.g the chain, so it could be easily fixable.

The other area to look closely at are the brakes. In particular has it got overrun brakes or electric ones? I think they mostly had electric brakes when imported which are not legal in this country, and would require the necessary wiring. Again parts would be a problem! I know some have been converted to overrun brakes using UK sourced parts, but it would cost around £500 to do this.

Thanks for the advice Glen, i've restored and built a couple of box trailers and twin axle car trailers so if i need to convert the brakes hopefully it won't be a major problem! It was just the work involved in the winding mechanism that was unknown to me as the previous trailer tent i had was a simple folding set up.

Regards Simon

I have no experience of servicing Colemans, but I know that the lift system relis on a cable opearted winch.  If the cable snaps or becomes dislodged they are a swine to repair.

Hi I know very little of these vans but if its like the cardinal it will use wire rope & a winch arangement which is bolted to the floor inside They sometimes suffer from floor rot/ delamination & the winch fixings pull through, requiring exstensive floor repairs

Hi coleman hae been around for along time, the lift system is by cable & usually last for years. You did'nt say what year the trailer was & some were grey imports ie not converted for the UK roads, some were unbraked which is ok if under 750kgs but lights & the 100 volts no goodfor uk campsites but all this can be done.

You may try this website  http://www.rvstop.co.uk/home.html they hail from the Southampton area & is a Coleman specialist, he ay be helpful but likes to be contacted by phone, leave a message & probably he contact you.  Also try the US sites like popoup portal its a bit like ukcampsite but popup specific (popup means folding camper ii the US)

Good luck.
