1. Don't try and put it up if it is windy unless there is plenty of help available.

2. Have plenty of beers or wine at the ready.

3. If, like me, you are somewhat vertically challenged,  set of steps is almost essential (or lessons in acrobatics!)

4. After 3 years of trying different ways, am still unsure whether it is better to put the frame up first, or attach the awning to the camper first. Usually we put the frame up first, but you need someone (preferably two people) to hold the poles.

5. Lay the poles out on the ground in the correct position, hook the side and centre poles into the camper frame, and lift the frame up and connect up the roof poles, and gently tighten. Then fit the other two roof poles. Make sure the front frame legs are still fully telescoped.

6. Lift the canvas over the front, fit the small extension poles and tie the awning onto the front of the frame.

7. Pull the canvas across and zip both sides part way up. Gently zip up both to the centre. This needs care as this is where you can damage the zip.

8. Lift the legs up to the right height and then peg the corners temporarily. Stretch the roof poles.

9. I had strings which stretch across each of the 4 openings with hooks on one end. This ensured that the openings were the exact distance apart for each panel to zip in.

10. Starting nearest the camper, peg out properly.

11. At this point get out the chilled beers and have a break. This also give the inevitable audience chance to pop in and put the kettle on without missing any of the fun.

12. At some later time I unhook the 4 strings across the openings and zip the panels in and peg down and fit the curtains. Job done.

Frankly the awning is the reason we got rid of ours. We would probably have kept it if there had been a smaller awning which was easier to put up.

Do also stow the awning and poles in the middle of the camper on the floor. NEVER put them on the seats at the back, this is enough to make the unit very unstable when towing.

Well what can I say other than thank you very much for taking the time to compose such an indepth reply.

It seems like I will need plenty of No 2, mind you there is always plenty of both.

And I can't wait for No 11. I take it, that it's not advisable to do No 11 prior to any preceding number.

You're welcome.

Don't do number 11 too soon in the process, otherwise you will never get to number 11 if you see what I mean. Anyway, you'll need time for the fridge to cool down properly ....

The cords at the bottom by the way...

I used thin guy line and some alloy hooks sold in camping shops for guy ropes. I ties the guy line to a D ring at one side of each opening and roughtly tied a hook at the other, then with the door zipped in, made the string and hook the same length as the opening. Once the awning has been erected, these can be tied up and tucked out of the way.

I would not advise putting the awning up with the doors in, its heavy enough as it is, and if the wind gets under it, the poles or the awning could be damaged.

If you've got side skirts, then get a piece of groundsheet to fit under the rear skirt, then if you are not using the awning it can be stowed under there. We usually took the awning down the night before a move.

Get a stool or stand on the inside of the unit and reach through the window to reach the high points when zipping it on.

First thing I do is lay all the poles out roughly where I'll need them.

Second, I attach the roof poles to the FC but let them rest on the ground at the other end - stretched out a bit.

Thirdly, I zip the awning on from each side (panels zipped in place).  The roof poles help to support the weight and the angle they lean at gives me room to see and breathe as I work underneath.

Then I do the outer poles, which were laid out in reach as I mentioned.  It's a lot easier to do with one or two others to help but I have managed it all on my own - had to quickly dodge a collapsing roof pole once though!

I'm tall enough to reach up to connect and adjust the outer poles but I need a sturdy set of steps and a big stretch to get the highest bit of the zip done up - our zip has a very long toggle on it - not sure if that's standard but it's handy.

No 11 from freeatlast's list is a must.

Thanks very much for the other replies. I'm sure it will all become a lot clearer after the first attempt and not too much of No 11  !!!

If it ends up looking like a sack of potatoes, check you have the window panes in the correct sides (not like us!!!).
Took us 2 outings to realise what we did wrong - DOH!

We have only put ours up a couple of times on our pathfinder due to the size of it! We zip the awning on before fully erecting the camper as we find this easier. We had a conway challenger before the pathfinder and found this to be easier so we just do the same. We are seriously looking at buying a drive away porch awning for our pathfinder just to save time and as usually only the 2 of us the main awning is really too big.

Looks like I have quite a few options to try out. I think at first we will have a couple of goes in the back garden, so as not to provide too much entertainment for our fellow campers when arriving on site.
