Thank you so much David and Sue for your kind offer - you are a really friendly bunch on this forum.  We got a trip to Manchester planned for next weekend but will let you know if we don't get for any reason.

John - yes we saw the combicamp.  Was surprised how easy it seemed.  They were a really nice family and we sat and watched the DVD that came with theirs.  It definitely worth considering although it is quite expensive!  Was impressed how well thought out it all is.  It was a venezia and they gave us the brochure and price list.  We would need the awnings as sometimes our son and his partner will come with us.

At least doing all the research now we are getting a good idea what's on offer.  Would probably have to go for second hand combicamp (if we could find one) but could just run to a new camp-let.

Just found out our friends parents have a Dandy so got one of those to look at too.

Thank you everyone for being so helpful.

Bordercaz - sorry to hear about your nephew.  I hope someone has told him about the Willow Foundation that funds a special day out for people under the age of 40 who are living with life threatening illness.  Something like this certainly focuses you on what is important in life and teaches you how precious each day with your family is.

Steve - found our our vitara grand is 2litre auto diesel so towing no problem.

Also think we did ought to look at caravans as well before making final decision.

Hi Claire

Hope thing work out for you.  I hope this info helps you deceide what to buy.  I am a single mum with two kids 10 & 9.   I wanted them to experience new place and make their holidays an adventure. I didn't want them to miss out on anything.  I looked at a few different trailer tents and folding campers then a trip to Camperlands (live near) made me make up my mind I bought a Camplet and have never looked back.  I needed someting I could manage with them at the time my kids were 7 & 8 yrs.  I do get some looks when I roll up on a site and put it up on my own, the kids help and they love being responsibly for the pegging out, getting water etc.

Just remember when choosing you will have to do any lifting, pulling & pushing.  i must say if I have needed any help other campers have been great.

Good Luck Louise

Thank you David and Sue - We are now considering getting a 2 berth touring caravan with full awning and annex but still haven't made final decision until we have researched everything.  We will get there in the end but think it may take some time!

Whatever yoy decide Clairev, may I add my best wishes to all the others.  Do remember that caravans generally need more storage space and can be more difficult to manoeuvre singlehandedly.  Good luck.

Hi Claire,
As much as I love Dandys I think that you might have a stuggle putting one up by yourself unless it has gas struts on the beds. If you are considering a combicamp have a look at the Commanche range as well. I think they're cheaper than Camplets but don't have a kitchen built in, same as combicamps.

The Commanches are heavier to lift than Combis because they don't have the rack to counterbalance it as you open it. They are cheaper but don't appear as welll made. Combis can be bought with or without attached kitchen. The nice thing about the Camplet is the kitchen, but I have a friend who changed to a Combi because she found it a real struggle to erect the Camplet on her own.

Whatever you buy, make sure you can do it, don't let the salesman help at all. They make it look so easy when they are demonstrating it all the time. They also tend to be strong chaps!

Unless she's a 6st lady of the most petite proportions, I cant believe for one minute that she wouldn't be able to put a Camp-let up on her own. It is one their biggest plus points. Certainly she should try as and when she goes to view but I think it an unlikely concern whilst deciding.

Sorry to talk about you Claire as if you aren't here!

If you go for the Camplet make sure it is a later model with gas assist for opening and closing. We have a 2002 Camplet Concorde which we are getting rid of because :

a, we found it very heavy to open and close even for two of us. It would be impossible for just one of us.

b, It still takes a lot of time to peg out and fit underbed starage apron.

We have changed to a Trigano folding camper which does not need pegging out for short stays and is much lighter to open and close

Hi Claire
If you do decide on a Camplet maybe you might be interested in mine. I haven't put it up for sale yet but if you were interested I would be prepared to sell it to you for £3900. Its a 2007 Camplet Savanne and been used for 1 week only. Its coloured Beige and Cognac same as the brochure picture in my profile. It is complete with the following extras

Side Annexe - Sun Canopy complete with Side and front windbreaks - Touring Cover - Bed Slats in r/h side cabin - Centre Pelmet with fitted pockets - Large Front storage Box - Jockey wheel - Spare wheel and carrier (fitted under trailer) - Groundsheet - Gas bottle and regulator.

As it is a 2007 model it does have the gas assisted struts.
To buy it new it would cost in excess of £6000

If you decide on some other option may I wish you good luck and hope everything works out fine for you.

Regards     Jim
