Have to disagree with vwalan - the blue/green chemicals DO stop a commercial sewage treatment plant working (in high enough quantities, not the quantities that will end up at the treatment plants from us emptying our loos), but they are supposed to CLEAN the water - a porta-potti is just to hygienically seal the waste away. 

The blue/green stuff actually speeds up the disintegration of solids (paper or poo!), making emptying easier (the chemicals work best if you give them time - don't empty the loo until it's full - it doesn't need emptying every day).  The chemicals also help to stop smells and gases forming in the tank, especially in warm weather.  Use them as directed on the bottles, and emptying the loo will be easy, and not half as unpleasant you think it could be, even if you DON'T limit use to 'number ones' (we use ours for everything - we use lots of sites without facilities, and have done for years, even before we had the caravan).

I've just bought a bottle of Elsan Organic toilet fluid, yet to try it out but it certainally smell less 'chemically' and claims to be biodegradeable and eco friendly.  One bottle also does two jobs, for both waste tank and flush water by using different concentrations.
