Hi we have got a second hand porta potty for our tt and we are only gonna use it for number 1's, what we want to know is do we have to use the recommended blue/green flushing chemicals or can we just use bleach or the likes.
I would use what the manufactures recommend, if you dont you can damage the seals, use blue or green in the bottom part, just use water in the top tank. There is some pink stuff for the top, but after a while you get black moldy stuff being rinsed down caused by the pink stuff, I dont know why.
just use a splash of vinegar in bottom tank . blue or green only stops it letting nature work. dont put bleach or any sort of cleaner in at all . dont wash the bottom out either let it build up bacteria. its like a cesspit it needs bacteria . i worked in the sewage bussiness for a while was very interesting . can talk **** for hours.
Have to disagree with vwalan - the blue/green chemicals DO stop a commercial sewage treatment plant working (in high enough quantities, not the quantities that will end up at the treatment plants from us emptying our loos), but they are supposed to CLEAN the water - a porta-potti is just to hygienically seal the waste away.
The blue/green stuff actually speeds up the disintegration of solids (paper or poo!), making emptying easier (the chemicals work best if you give them time - don't empty the loo until it's full - it doesn't need emptying every day). The chemicals also help to stop smells and gases forming in the tank, especially in warm weather. Use them as directed on the bottles, and emptying the loo will be easy, and not half as unpleasant you think it could be, even if you DON'T limit use to 'number ones' (we use ours for everything - we use lots of sites without facilities, and have done for years, even before we had the caravan).
Has anybody had trouble with the pink stuff, you put into the top flush tank.I used it all the time but found after a couple of seasons we got black speckles being flushed down, stopped useing it & the problem stopped, so do not use it any more.
i have used my potapotty without blue/ green chemicals for years always empties ok . dont empty till full or moving a distance . both the blue/ green are not eco friendly . best not use it just for solids as it needs some liquid to help it break down. use water in the flush ,dont wash the bottom with cleaners unless its the special biological stuff for use with ceptic tanks . its bacteria thats required to break it down,
From experience, I would say it depends what you want to happen to your poo!
As vwalan says, the purpose of the aqua-kem, green or otherwise, is to kill the bacteria which a) cause the poo to break up and b) cause a smell. An additional purpose is to chemically break up the solids, because the bacteria which would otherwise have done so are now dead.
If you want effective decomposition of solids, don't use aquakem. If you want a lack of pong, do use aquakem.
When I was a boy we used jeyes fluid, but its so un-environmentally friendly that you may as well club baby seals to death to use as loo paper.
Personally we use modest amounts of Aquakem Green. Don't use bleach; it can make the plastic brittle.
I've just bought a bottle of Elsan Organic toilet fluid, yet to try it out but it certainally smell less 'chemically' and claims to be biodegradeable and eco friendly. One bottle also does two jobs, for both waste tank and flush water by using different concentrations.
