Hi, I've a two year old pathfinder thats getting rust on rivet and screw heads (both brown iron rust and grey galvanised sort) and on the fittings hinges (the ones you see when the panels are bent over).

The only thought I've had to stop it getting worse is to sand off and smear WD40 or vaseline on them. Any other suggestions ?

Thanks for any advice, Dave T.

Hi Dave,

You could paint them with clear nail varnish.

Thats an interesting one as I'd worried about the other two methods staining (though rust has already started doing this).

I'll give that  a try, thanks

Dave & Sharon.

I used to do this with bicycles 20 + years ago to protect nuts and bolts etc. The good thing is items remain serviceable. Vaseline will not stain though and is a good thread lube but will attract dirt and grit like a magnet. WD40 may stain none metallic surfaces.

as mentioned sand off the rust on the rivets, and cover with nail varnish or yacht varnish, the screws you could easily replace with some brass ones, and maybe change the hinges[diy store]
