i've just bought a smart car to tow with an A frame behind my motor home looking for advice on how to attach the motor home number plate over the smart car plate when towing

Do you even need to fo that? Any police or in the know people on this forum? Surely as long as the cr being towed is taxed and insured and is not obscuring the motorhome plate then does it need to carry the motorhome reg? Of course if it is then have a chat with your local garage who probably recover cars all the time, I'm guessing that you'd then need a light board with the number on it.

it depends where your plate is on the motorhome if it's high up then maybe you don't need it as i would of thought that attaching a number plate to a trailer/caravan is so police can tell what car is towing but if you can see both reg numbers then i wouldn't of thought it was necessary.

Or you could do what the car industry does buy a small amount of chain and drill some holes in the plate secure chain to plate and dangle over back windscreen wiper.

Or take off car reg plate and replace with motorhome plate then change back at campsite.

Or prop the number plate up in the rear screen of the Smart if possible.

I'm afraid you may have wasted your money.  The whole idea of towing on an A frame is that they are only for recovery of a broken down vehicle.  The car counts as a trailer, & a Smart comes in at around 750Kg.  If the A frame is not braked it is not allowed as it exceeds the allowable limit for an un-braked trailer.  The braked ones don't meet the regs either.  Your insurance is invalid.  Never heard of anyone being done, but this has cropped up a number of times.  See HERE
