Do I want a trailer tent or folding camper ? What are the main differences between the two. We were going to get a campervan this year but changed our minds due to it being our only car it would not be practical, so we decided on the TT or FC. Which one would be more acceptable on sites. With the tent we can not go on a lot of sites that we would like due to us wanting electric. I am really confused as to the choice. we are a family of 4. 2. adults and 2 children 5 + 8 years.

TTs and FCs not looked at differently on sites as far as I know.

Main difference - TT kitchen outside in awning, FC kitchen fixed inside.

The only way you'll find out what's best for you really is by going to look at some different ones, Dandy's, Pennines, Conways, Triganos, Cabanons, Camplets, Raclets, Combicamps etc etc.

We have a Dandy, 6 berth, can put it away wet and can use it with battery or EHU.

With a folding camper you will effectively be treated as a caravan and allowed on hardstanding with ehu by the majority of sites. They occupy the same footprint as a caravan and awning and as with a caravan everything is contained with in the body of the van. With a trailer tent you tend to "need " the awning to cook in. Folding campers do not need pegging on the main unit which also endears them to sites not wanting tents. On the down side they are more expensive and heavier than trailer tents.

We have a Conway Countryman folding camper.  It is a good size for the three of us. Its a nice neat shape to fit onto any pitch & good to tow & store and we're getting quite quick at putting it up - under an hour. We can use it without the  2.5 metre awning - on one trip we knew rain was forecast for the day we were leaving the campsite so we packed up the awning the night before to avoid having to take it down wet.  We can sit in the awning during the day but its cosy to sit up in the cabin in the evening when we watch a dvd.  We have an almost fully fitted kitchen - sink, cooker, grill & fridge and electric sockets (240v & 12v)  At night  we put our portpotti in in the awning and during the day we tuck it underneath one of the beds.

My brother has a Cabanon Mistral trailer tent.  Its much bigger with a 3 metre awning &  1 metre awning extension & sun canopy.  It takes them quite a long time to put up (about 2 hours)  I think the beds are bigger than ours  but the cabin is not quite as usable as ours,  The kitchen is detached from the main unit and placed in the awning and they have a wardrobe/toilet area.

We are very happy with our folding camper

For me its the folding camper, I have both a suncamp TT and a conway crusader FC. There are differences but to be honest before we bought the FC our TT was brilliant we had some excellent trips away. The Crusader FC is on another planet compared to my Suncamp TT but they are much more expensive, heavier and more dificult to store.

Used to have a Pennine Pathfinder..........loved it17 Had 3 double beds, but we only used the ones at each end, one for us, one for the kids, and kept the other as sofas.

Everything in it, fridge, wardrobe, toilet/washroom, full size cooker, sink etc and very well made. We had some stinkers of a holdiday weather wise, even the police coming to the campsite in France once, to tell everyone to batton down the hatches, but always stayed dry and warm. Never used just the main bit without the awning, as being very large, and heavy to pull (almost 1 ton), we only used it for long stays.

Downsides were that the awning took an age to put up, we had major problems if we had to pack down wet, as it was way too big to put up in our garden, and the storage & insurance cost a bomb because of the value. Our fuel consumption went down hugely went towing...and it wasn't great to start with (that's old Vee Dubs for you) 17

Had to sell her in the end as she wasn't being used enough, and costing a fourtune, but we do miss her........if we just had the space, and a better tow car 17

We have a Raclet TT now. Canvas is the same as Pathfinder (Ten Cate) so should stay dry, but the level of luxury is obviously lower...but then it did cost 10th of the cost of the Pathfinder 17

On a plus, beds are still off the ground, plenty of space, and the main unit can still be used without pegging down if we wanted, but I don't think that very likely. It also packs down small enough to keep in our garden, weighs a lot less so cheaper to tow, and cheaper to insure.

On a minus, kitchen facilities are no where near as good & no sofas to sprawl on in bad weather.

Obviously this is quite an extreme example, as we went from a top of the range FC to a TT, so if you went for a less expensive FC, the difference between the two wouldn't be so great.

Hope this is some help.17

Why can't you get electric with a tent??? Never heard of that before (unless its on a hard standing) Not that I'm saying you can't get a TT or FC of course! Lol

Lots of sites accept tents but you cannot get EHU. We go to haven  (my daughters love it) but not all do EHU for tents. There is a site in Southport we would like to go to but they do not do EHU for tents.

If you go down the trailer tent route, we have a 2008 Camplet Royal that has just gone up for sale on ebay. Having to sell because we're moving abroad. Had 2 great holidays in it. The Camplet's are really light so dead easy to tow, plus the all-in-one canvas and trailer mean you open up, pull out like a pram lid and hey presto you're under cover.

Sorry here is the link to the Camplet Royal if you're interested.

Must say also we had the old trailer tent and folding camper debate when we were buying last year. Wish I hadn't spent so much time worrying about it now we have to sell!

Thats bad!! Never heard of that before, you should join the Camping & Caravan Club you just book an electric pitch then camp in what you want, mind you not as exciting on site as a haven site
