Hello, we are off to France next week in our trailer tent for the first time. We are puzzling about the gas situation. We have a Calor Gas bottle but I am aware you can't get that in Europe. What do people do? Do we just get the bottle refilled here before we go? How can you tell how much gas is left in it? Of should we just get camping gaz when we get there- we have a trigano oceane, do they use different adapters? As you may guess we haven't a clue what we are doing as this is also our first trip in the trailer tent so any tips about anything else gratefullly received! Thanks, Marie.
What size Calor cylinder do you have? We use a 4.5Kg Butane & it lasts for years running the cooker (we don't use the gas heater or fridge). There is an aluminium disc giving the empty weight of the cylinder in pounds & ounces held on to the top of the cylinder by the valve. Weigh the cylinder & this will tell you how much gas is in there. On a cold morning, you'll see condensation on the cylinder showing the gas level. You can also get a Gasflow gauge that shows when the cylinder is running out. Shaking the cylinder & feeling the liquid slosh around is a rough & ready method. The magnetic stick on gauges do not work.
Camping Gaz is as you say available abroad. It will work fine in your camper, but you will need a cylinder (free from your local tip) & a regulator for about £5.
We atke two times 4.5 Kg bottles with us when we go. Last year in four weeks we used about 1.5 kg altogether. We only use it for the oven and the three rings occasionally. Hot water is with a low wattage electric kettle, fridge is also on the mains electric. In your case it really depends on what you use your gas for.
Went to towsure to get some new gas pipe (rubber sutff). Bought a t pipe splitter and a calor regulator (as we only had campingaz). We now have one reg for each. As we mainly run on calor now , the campingaz does not need to be conntected as the regulator has the gas valve built in so I can shut it off. If I ever need to use the campingaz then all I need to do is make sure the calor is connected but with the gas valve closed . Of course I don't switch both on as this would over pressure the system.
Both systems ar 28 mBar I think, both cylinders are Butane but I'm not sure that I'd be connecting the two. There isn't really a need in a TT. It is different in a static van or even a tourer when the water could go cold with you in the shower!
I work in IT, you weren't expecting a simple solution that followed the rules of common sense now were you. In hindsight there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have two regulators attached, but you should have seen the database design I was going to use :) PS No I do have a life honest.
