You will need some way of connecting it, the free standing awnings have the same as a caravan awning - a beading that goes through the awning rail. To attach to a motorhome they use "figure of 8" strips which hook on to the van' gutter, or magnetic things, which do the obvious.
Maybe it could be attached using clamps of some sort. A friend has a Pathfinder and uses a caravan awning which has been modified by changing the beading to a zip which matches the Pathfinder zip.
A caravan awning would be much cheaper than a stand alone one.
