Hi all, like many other I suppose most of the rubber band like tie down thingy's on my Conway Cambrigde awning have perished.

Can anyone please tell me what they are officially called (so I can google them), where to get some replacement ones and how do you fit the new ones as the original ones are obviously sewn into the awning.

Thank you for any help,

Greg.

Don't know what there called ,but many years ago I replaced some rubbers on a tent using the split keyrings that you put keys on attaching to the canvas loops first then attaching the rubbers after, if you get my drift !

                           hope this helps  Dave

not sure what they're called but any half decent camping shop will have them on the shelf. To fit them push 1 end through the loop on the canvas and then the other end of the rubber back through itself.  Alternatively (and I'm thinking of doing this) I can see no reason why you couldn't just cut some shock cord to lenght and tie it through the loop like they do on modern tents

Thanks for the help, as above that's exactly what I am going to do. I have just bought a 2 man tent and it has bungee cord to peg the tent down.

So I have got some 3mm bungee cord off ebay for a fiver and I am going to make my own the same as the tent ones.

do you think 3mm will be strong enough for a bigger tent?  I'd be tempted to go for 5 or 6mm but I'm no expert on bungee cord17

I got 5mm to replace the stuff that ties the cover down on the trailer tent and it's quite big stuff so I thought 3mm would do. If we blow away next week I'll post back recommending 5mm.....

The cord on my new tent is around 3-4mm and looks as if it would be ok for the bigger tent, only time and wind will tll though.

You're right, the 5mm does look a bit thick.  Think I'll go for the 3mm aswell. Never thought about getting it off ebay though, thanks for the tip!

Can recommend a seller if you want. (autoperformanceonline is the seller)

10 metres of 3mm is about £4.50 delivered.

Paid £5 for 10 metres of 5mm came within 48 hours.

If you want a neater job than tying the shock cord you want some of these...

http://www.sailboats.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?productID=B449&categoryID=4587

The crimp on with a pair of pliers (although it does take a bit of effort).

One of these...

or similar available from Maplin.

I did one of my camper awnings that way and it looked a really professional job!

I bought a pack of 30 Bungee Cords from eBay (eBay Item number 260450831482 shows the same thing).

They cost £1.99 including postage.  I had them delivered within a few days and used some at the weekend and they work a treat.
