Oh my goodness - this is such a difficult one isn't it?  I agree that kiddies should be able to enjoy all the freedom that we all did as kids and should be able to ride their bikes and play football etc and generally be able to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors.  But when I read all these horror stories in the newspapers or hear about some sweet little innocent child going missing on the news - it terrifies me and as much as I would love to think this is maybe not as rife as it sounds - I just daren't take the risk and let them roam about freely.  Thankfully my youngest is now 18 years (but I still worry- but have had to force myself to let go) but now I have a little granddaughter and I know when she is with me - I am always vigilante about where she is and as much as we all like to think it wont happen to us - I for one dare not take that risk.  I wish I could be more like some of you and not let myself get too paranoid about this - but I was like it with my own 3 and I guess I will be like it with my grandchildren too.  Any tips on how to relax more and not be so possesive with them cos I know I must drive them all bonkers with my worrying?

Hi Pegtent, the walkie talkies we use can be bought in most electronic goods stores, Dixons, the link, argos etc. The ones we have cost about £40, but there are cheaper ones available. Here's a link to a selection at Argos.....

As for your 5yr old using one, I am sure if she can use phone she could use the radio. The biggest problem is stopping them from losing it or leaving where they were playing and moving on. Obviously the radio isn't a suresafe way to guard your kids from dodgy people, but it is a good start.

My kids use 2 way radios, very handy for keeping in touch , although they do seem to develop selective hearing after a while

Thanks Highside. I think I'll add the wristwatch radio to my Xmas list, after doing a bit of research on them.
