Hi - are there any Folder Campers who also take along a sailing dinghy ?

We have a Conway Challenger FC & a watersports mad son, and we're thinking of buying a sailing dinghy - but can't decide how we can continue to use the FC.

I know you can get smaller dinghies to go on top of the car - but the one's I've seen look quite long + there'd be a launching trolley also, so I've nearly dismissed this option.

Another idea is to build a rack to fix above the FC - and put a dinghy on that.

I've seen lots of sailers / kayakers on Keswick C&CC site & wonder how they transport all their gear ? Maybe they use tents, which fold up into the car - freeing the towbar to tow a dinghy trailer ??

Any thoughts / ideas or solutions that you currently have, would be most appreciated.

Thanks

PeteD, York

We saw on holiday a pennine with a rack to take a canoe. I've got a photo somewhere but basically it gave you two roof bars on the camper to take a bike or whatever.

We have a inflatable 3.9m Suzamar with 25hp engine- it has demountable launching wheels that . The plan was to fold it up and carry it in the bags but as we couldn't fit all our stuff in my 1.4 MG beforehand I don't know where OH thought it would go. He had to get a towbar fitted to his car (ha ha ruined his street cred - not that he had any according to DS)  We now take 2 cars - boat stays on it's trailer so it's less work at the other end.

You'll have to watch your weight if you put it on top.

I'm not a sailor myself, bt spend a bit of time around boats and boatshows.

Topper's have developed from the original car-toppable dinghy, but are still very good.

I also looked at these at a show...

They look very sturdy, and are probably easier to car-top than a rigid boat.
