I hope the girl is recovered from her ordeal. I agree with Jo and John the French campsites do have it right. The communal block does mean that it's always busy and the large cubiles make it easy for everyone to fit in.

We have camped on a few English sites and more recently I've had a battle with my son who wanted to be independent and go to the toilet by himself. He's seven and I had to insist that he went in the female toilets, while I waited outside. In France this year there wasn't that problem.

Our last campsite was on the Isle of Wight and had access to a beach which made the facilities feel very unsafe. I've decided to go for smaller sites and preferably French ones. The Sunelia site we went to this year had excellent security and the kids felt as though they had freedom. They also had kids toilets, giving kids some independence.

I had to tell my two children that the freedom they had on our last site would not be the same for every site, especially if we went to a large site or the traditional toilet facilities that the English sites have. It really is a very difficult thing because you want your children to be safe and watched but at the same time, not have them too scared to have some independence. Any ideas how to do that?

Very well Jo it was a C&CC temp holiday site so showers were on campsite next to our rally site the marshalls were excelent taking the parents to the site security people who made a log and gave them the no for the police. the marshal then directed the police to peops next door and stayed till police left. I think i must tell you the police told the person next door that its not just children that these sicko's are targeting its adult men and women as well all due to porno mags and webb sites that pay for these type of films/ photo's

Thanks for the warning charlie,it does not matter if the children go in groups as all children are vulnerable at any age.

I have only just started letting my two eldest use 'mens' facilities in the last couple of years. The eldest is nearly twelve now and the middle one nearly 10, but they are still only allowed to go to the showers on the campsite together. Although I have the same policy at home when they are out playing. They stay near the house, unless they and there friends go together, even then I want to know where they are. I have explained that if they want their independence they have to follow my rules. If they break the rules they get grounded. My problem is my youngest, who at nearly 5 thinks he can do the same as his brothers. It will be a constant battle for the next 7 years or so. We went to Freshwater Beach in Dorset, in August, and I have to admit the gap under the shower doors was huge, and did not allow for much privacy.
