I have a 2002(I Think)pennine pathfinder 600tc and have had blow outs on the motorway 2 years in a row! I e-mailed pennine who said about 36psi but that doesn't seem enough. The trailer weighs about 1200kg loaded up. The tyres bulge a lot. Should I have a certain sort of tyre as well?

What is your tyre size and ply rating etc. If you go onto the British Tyre Manufacturers Association website, www.btmauk.com they have a booklet in pdf format (Caravan Tyres and your Safety) which gives lots of useful info about tyre pressures etc.

thanks. Also I'm not sure how long the tyrs had been on. Could be 5+ years. Could they have degraded?

Ours a 2003 are at 36 psi as per the handbook.

You will find the axle weight load code on the tyre. 1200Kgs sounds a little bit heavy for your outfit, (have you weighed it). I had a similar weight and shock with our outfit when I weighed it at the local bridge this year. (All we had on board was the usual, gas , battery, awning poles and cooking utensils and some food) Fortunately I had upgraded the tyres to 8 ply 13 x 165/80 Hankook's which can carry 1340 Kgs and have discovered that the brakes are rated for 1370kgs. The original tyres were rated for only 1000Kg!!!!

You will see that caravan tyres should be replaced idealy at 5 and no more than 7 years of age.

Sorry to hijack this thread a little but I have just got a Pennine Pullman and have been wondering about tyre pressures. Do you check them cold or when they have warmed up? I have been told to check my car pressures after a run when the tyres have warmed up because they will read lower when cold so I am worried about over inflating if I check the trailer pressures before I set off, or is the difference not enough to matter?

Thanks for that. Too much watching Formula1 and hearing them complaining about loss of pressure when they are behind safety cars etc. Although there is some difference between an F1 car and a Toyota with a FC behind it (not much tho!

Thanks for all the replies. After a bit of investigating I estimate that my outfit(loaded with the usual stuff) probably weighs in at 1000kg. The tyres have a load index of 83(487kg) meaning they weren't quite right. I think the main cause of my blowouts were probably due to degraded tyres-as I bought the unit second hand I have no way of knowing if the trailer was stood still for long periods. Perhaps it would be a good piece of advice for people buying used trailers/caravans to budget for a new set of tyres regardless of what the current ones look like!

pumping tyres with nitrogen eliminates the difference between cold and hot tyre pressures
my son uses nitrogen in his tyres on his kawasaki but he does ride it quite hard
