Hi all

We have had from new a 2003 Pennine Sterling with awning and extras but have been looking at Combi-Camp and Camp-Let trailer tents.

Has anyone else gone from a folding camper to one of these trailer tents and if so share what they have thought of both units, the reason I ask is the Sterling is great don't get me wrong and the main unit does go up quite quick but when you want the awning and you do need this if its more than say one night as there are 3 of us (my son aged 14) this adds another half hour onto the setup so from start to finish it takes about 1 hour.

The trailer tents I mention seem to be very quick going up and all the poles fro the awning are already attached according to the Camperlands video but not sure if it is as comphy and warm as the Sterling when sitting inside of a night.

They do look good and it would depend on their cost and what PX I would get for the Sterling

Any information would be appreciated not sure if its just because we have had it 6 years I mam looking for a change or it would be easier with something lighter and quicker to put up.

Thanks

Steve

Whilst the Camplets and Combi-camps of this world are quick to erect (and good units for sure), I wonder if you will be as happy as the Pennine is IMHO is better than both. You will probably save about 40 minutes in total erection time when using the awning, but the beds, and the overall seating is very likely to be more comfortable in what you have. I think the only way you are going to resolve this is to try a dealer which has them erected and really spend sometime in them both before you decide.

Be interested to know what you do in the end.

We've had this dilemma as me and 12 yr old son often go away a few days before OH gets there so were looking for something quicker/easier to put up - we decided in the end that you couldn't beat what we've got- and the cosiness at night - sorry you just don't get that with any tt IMHO.

we had a pullman for 4 years, and it was ace, decided that the kids were not going to be camping with us any more, we sold up and went for a raclet solena, nice size and relativly easy to erect, but the drastic change[imo] of comfort told us that we had done wrong, we sold it after one trip out!! [lost£50:00] we then picked up our Fiesta, and the extra light and comfort was very notable and we knew we had gone "back on track" not knocking the TT, but if its comforts you wish then have a good look at what you are looking for first and compare it to what you have.good luck

Keep it, with the UK weather much nicer to be off the ground at night, sell & I am sure you will regreat it.

I agree your sterling is a lot more comfy that a camplet or combi camp (even tho I love the look of both of them and always get a brochure every year! lol) Don't think the awning on the combi would be much quicker to put up than the pennine one? The camp let being all in one piece would probably go up faster but the unit is more basic than the one you have.

Hi

thanks for your replies and helping make up our minds to keep what we have, we will still go and see them and and you say spend some time checking the comfort size and to see if we could get everything in that we take now but at the end of the day spending a little extra time setting up maybe worth the extra comfort

Thanks

Steve

We have several friends with combicamps (sorry peeps) and what I prefer about ours is the caravan style seating not the trailer tent style bench. They do go up and down easily though.

One thing you have to consider is how much longer your son will be coming with you. At some stage he will decide that it is no longer 'cool' to holiday with you. You could then use just the main unit for yourselves.

I agree that you will miss the comfort if you do decide to change.

I've just sold a camplet to go back to a folding camper..
It still takes best part of an hour to be up and running in a camplet. at least if the weather is bad or its a one night stop somewhere you can choose not to put up the awning on a folding camper.

Have you considered a porch awning. Ours gives plenty of extra room, is easy to errect and a lot quicker to dry if it has to go awat damp.

Returned to camping after quite a few years and thought a Camplet would be just the thing ( bought new)  Was great but not for us it just wasn't cosy enough. Lost quite a bit of money on the resale of it but purchased a Dandy Designer, if it is cosy you want don't go down th TT road

We have Pennines now but have previuosly owned Camplets. Theres only the 2 of us generally but the comfort and snugness is fab. We can even have an argument and have a spare bedroom! The ease of overnight stops is the thing we like with the Pennines as well-so quick! On site we do not need to put the awning up as we have enough space.  The kids have now left home but far from the Pennine being redundant- they now nick it to put on the back of their car! Sorry but I would go Pennine every time!
