Hi there,

I asked a friend of mine who works for Imperial College looking at plastic and synthetic fabrics to give me the lowdown on cotton vs synthetic fabrics. This is a summary of what he told me. Obviously, this doesn't invalidate anybody's personal experience!

Firstly, he said there is definatively no such thing as either UV proof or rotproof. There are some materials which stand up to it better than others, but even PVC will go brittle with sun and age.

Secondly, the factors in how long a material takes to fail are much more dependent on quality of manufacture and the treatment it has recieved than what it is made of. This may explain some of the different experiences out there.

He says that breathable simply means that the weave is small enough to let air through but not water because of the water's surface tension. So any canvas should be breathable. He did however say that cotton is porous so the fibres will swell when rained on. For this reason he thought untreated (i.e. not Nikwaxed) cotton would be slightly more breathable in the dry but swell up and still be waterproof in the wet.

Apparently you can get away with more in terms of low quality cotton then you can low quality acrylic. If the fibres are spun too fast they get really uneven and can break really easily, compromising the strength and making it more prone to UV damage. This might not be a problem with Pennine but could potentially be so with Sunncamp.

Because cotton is porous, if it does get mildew the mould will take a real hold and be difficult to get off. On acrylic the fibres are hard and scaly and mildew should be easier to clean off. He can't think of any reason other than cosmetic why you would care about mildew marks on canvas - it's easy to kill and once dead it doesn't cause damage. He thinks that is the reason that manufacturers say you can pack acrylic away wet - the mildew still grows in the water, it just wipes off easily.

Again, he stressed that the lifetime of either material depends far more on the quality and treatment of the cloth, but when pushed, it was his opinion that high quality cotton treated well would last longer than high quality acrylic treated well, but that if they were treated badly (i.e. left in the sun for months, put away wet etc.) the acrylic would last longer.

I hope those scientific opinions help!

Charlie

I'll see your Imperial College and raise it to MIT.

He agrees with all of you post and adds that because cotton is breathable when dry, heat can dissipate through it. So cotton is cooler in sunshine (which I think we will all atest to)

Not at all bad! Do you sweat in your insulated brick house.

No, and that's the point. My insulated brick house is, well, insulated. And, thanks to airbricks, breathable.

And no, 1 mm of polystyrene foam don't count!

Trust me! It's 15 years old, I've owned it 5 years & my wife is picky. Previous owner only sold it 'cos he had cancer. It's been down to the Med, the Alps, France many times. We've camped in Cumbria & Scotland in the snow & it really does not get sweaty or suffer condensation. At all.

I think that you could make just about any tent sweaty and unpleasant, or keep even a Dandy cool and light, depending on how you treat it and yourself.

I see no reason why a Dandy shouldn't be well ventilated, and as long as you didn't use a gas heater you should be fine...

True enough.  I remember the summer of 2003 being in a huge Key Camp Cabanon frame tent on a site in Brittany.  My son was one year old.  It was a record hot summer.  We couldn't even go in the tents until about 10 at night when the sun was down.  Sleep was all but impossible.  Even those in large stuck tin tents with air-con were flagging.  French pensioners were being culled by the score.  We spent much time in the daylight hours sheltering under a glass fibre turtle in the pool with a slide on the top.  Still, the wine was cheap & the seafood good!

The Mildew in my Acrylic Roof is trapped in the weave and because the Acrylic is Plastic coated on the outside top surface it's more than likely been caused by condensation from the inside. Seems to me if Plastic wont let the rain in it certainly wont let condendsation out. Pleased to report the Dealer has agreed to replace my awning with a full Cotton replacement

Nice to hear of good customer service.  Actually (and Charlie is going to love this) my awning roof has a couple of spots there where water has got into the weave.  It was there when we bought it & hasn't got worse.  The PVC awning does get condensation depending on ground & weather conditions.

Steve.

My old frame tent (still in my garage) has an acrylic roof and cotton sides. The acrylic roof use to condensate like mad because it is not breathable like cotton and this is the only part of the frame tent to suffer from mildew. The mildew formed whilst I was away.Because the undersurface of the tent is always damp it attracts mildew.Water trying to get out but unable to because of the acrylic material.
Again the tent was dried out when I got home within a couple of days but the damage was already done.
My cotton camp-let is brilliant and I do not see the reason for acrylic apart from looks.

It sounds to me like swings & round a bouts. Our canvas challenger is 12 yrs old, we have used it quite a lot,on average 45 days+ a season, its dry as dust inside even after a weeks rain in the Yorkshire dales. But it is a problem if you cannot pack it up dry, we are lucky as we can dry it on our drive.I have been looking to change ours,& buy a new acrylic camper but not to sure now I have read the comments about acrylic.
