Try second hand first, that way you will find out what works well for you before shedding a load of dosh.

We just picked up an 4 year old immaculate cabanon for less than £1000.  We felt it was the best way to go and once we had tried the beds we knew we had done the right thing!!

We insured ours as it was a big outlay and it cost us £50 per year. Well worth it I think.

Go round some shops and try some

we went from a frame tent to tt, best thing we ever did , well all most we now have a fc  so I think if you have the money go for the fc and cut out the middle man

We got a trailer tent so that Richard could sleep off the floor.    First one we got the kitchen unit was too heavy for me to lift solo, so I could not take the kids on my own with it, and have Richard join us part way through a break.    Sold that and got a different one - which I could, and where as the unit without the awning was fine for just the kids and me, no use if Richard joined us.     About 19 months ago, we knew somebody who was looking for a TT,so we sold it, and about the same time managed to pick up a bargain FC in Ebay - it really was a good move,   Living space without the need for an awning - the other year when we went away the weather was dreadful, so we spent most of the time in the main body of the camper.   
Where as the TT slept 4 in the main body the camper sleeps 6 as the table converts to a double bed - we have got the putting it up/down, down to a fine art.

Can be set up without the awning, and kettle on within 15 minutes.   
Our is easy to tow - although my current car won't tow it, my other car could.  But if I was just the kids and me, I would take a tent where Richard could sleep in an airbed.   As I now have a small car, and would need to tow, it is as easy to take a slightly larger tent, than a small one, which would not fit a camp bed in.
We love ours.   Best thing we did was swapping.
