hi
you can definitely have folding campers over here - we have two!! just be aware the speed limit for towing is 30miles an hour on all roads (we found this out by the blue flashing lights when we were doing 40mph)
you do need a permit if you want to bring a caravan but not folders- when you book you need to book it as a trailer and you get charged by the metre- approx £30 per metre- big tip they dont check the length and so you can sometimes get away with the shorter length of just the camper body.!
re campsite what sort of site are you looking for i.e electric hookups ,quiet, size etc and what time of year are you planning on coming. let me know and i can let you have some details of site which might suit.
we generally have milder weather than you lot over there but after the last three months I'm not guarenteeing it - usually May is good but June can be hit and miss as anyone who has been for TT week will know.
Any help I can give just ask

Thanks for that Nina.I camped in the Isle of Man 30 years ago with Scouts, but that was a farmers field outside Ramsey.I have great memories of that holiday, and the Island, and would love to go back and explore it again. Is it still as safe as it used to be?They used to say that petty crime was nearly non-existant.
Myself and herself camped in a campsite in Laxey in `98,I think it was Council operated, with basic facilities. We have a 10 yr old with us now,so we would need to have a little bit more to offer.Electric hook ups would be good, any other means of entertainment for kids also a plus.I know I could probably find this info via official channels, but word of mouth can often be better.Plus when we went over in `98,it was very hard to get an accurate image of sites from the info at hand.(We did not have the internet then either!)Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,Michael.

Michael
Sorry to hi jack your thread there !
You will have stopped at Crossags Farm with the scouts - We camped there as guides many times also. The island is still reasonably safe - my two kids are 13 and 15 and we never see them during the holidays as they bus it all over the Island with their mates with never a bit of bother ( they have been fortunate to be able to do this for the last 3 / 4 yrs) We still leave our house unlocked most of the time although there have been a spate of thefts lately so we may have to rethink this soon !
re the campsites for yourself and your lad I think Peel campsite or Glen Wyllin in Kirk Michael would siut you best.
Peel is run by the local commisioners and has nice flat sites with hook up, the showers etc are immaculate and there is a TV lounge area, campers kitchen etc . It is situated next door to the local swimming pool and is a short walk into the town (2mins) Peel beach is also one of the best on the Island and there is a good bus service from there. Prices last year were approx £5 per adult £3 per child and £3 hookup per night. It is quite a popular site so there should be other kids for company.
Glen Wyllin is in between Peel and Ramsey on a good bus route. It is a lovely site(we had a seasonal here for five years) with hookup points. The showers etc are not as immaculate as Peel but they are cleaned daily. the site can get very busy and noisy at times but not rowdy - just campers talking laughing etc. There is a beach at the bottom of the campsite road (1 min walk) a small park there is also a small shop on site. this site is popular and there are generally plenty of children around to make friends with. Prices here are roughly the same as Peel.
Depending on how long you are planning on coming for I would be tempted to spend some time on each of these as they both have different things to offer but both would suit your needs.
hope this helps
Nina x
