Hi, what types of security do people use to protect their trailer tents? Wheel clamps look as though they take a lot of space and add weight, hitch locks look lighter but how secure are they? Are the devices recongised by insurance companies?
New to the world of TT I'd be grateful for your experience.
we use hitch lock and wheel lock also padlock to car while towing for when we stop over in a hotel. insurance says yes to both hitch and wheel locks when stored away and camping.
I use a hitch lock at service stations. I don't use anything when on site as a thief would have to go through the whole process of dropping and folding the TT to steal it, which strikes me as very unlikely. At home we have a hitchlock and wheel clamp, plus it lives in our back garden behind high locked gates. The clamp is just for insurance purposes though. The real security though comes from the fact that there's a step of about a foot down from the road at our back gate. We had to get a special ramp made to be able to roll the TT in and out, and this lives inside our house.
As Valk_scot says the likleyhood of a TT or FT being stolen while erected is very remote. I use a hitch lock at service stations as well and hitch lock and unit stored in the garage at home. My friend stores his TT outside his house and takes a wheel off which he keeps in the house.

Plus they would have to pack everything away first then go round and remove the numerous pegs holding the tt and the awning to the ground - it would have to be a very keen thief who would do all that. We never used any security with ours while on site and never had a problem.

Wheel clamp at home and on site (maybe over cautious, but reduces chance of insurers turning down a claim). The Camp-lets have an in-built hitchlock for when hitched. It isn't especially strong, but is just another layer of trouble for thieves to contend with.
Hadn't really appreciated that the TT is at risk when you stop whilst towing, and is probably more secure when all set up on site. Thanks for all the replies, plenty to think about, starting with a decent hitchlock. Any recomendations?
I use both; a hitchlock when stopped at a service station - I have the sort which locks it to my car - and a wheel clamp both when on the site and in the garage.
I agree the wheelclamp is a P in the A but there have been cases of thieves doing just that - turning up on a campsite when the owners have disappeared for the day and packing the whole (usually) FC away. I don't risk it.
Why dont you go to the top of the page, click on search and type in "hitchlock " or "wheel clamp" etc and look at the past listings/ threads that have come up about security. Dont forget to maker a brew, have a pen and paper for notes, narrow down what you think what kit you require. If you're answer aint in that lot then come back and ask again.
