What I meant was that on the drive or in your garage you can think that you have made a waterproof and sound connection.  Yet, when you tow there are a lot of strains and stresses placed on things and these home made jobs can soon come unstuck. If competent and confident fine, but if there's a shred of doubt, get a professional to sort it.  If you blow your car's electrics at 60mph on the motorway with an artic up your rear end there could be consequences and even if you get over to the hard shoulder, I don't know how sympathetic your breakdown insurance providers might be either. It may be costly to get a spark in to sort it out properly but it may be cheaper in the long run. Just my opinion!

For home made job read "exactly the same as the electrician did" if you use one of those boxes in my link.   I second the bit about making it waterproof, but putting it inside the camper solves that one.  As for messing it up, the wires are all colour coded.  All you have to do is match red to red, black to black & blue to bits!

Steve, that is the point. Its too easy to get bullied into doing something you're not 100% happy with, just because someone else thinks you should be able to do it. Even if you've done an impeccable job, if you're not sure you won't ever be truly relaxed about the repair. Sometimes peace of mind is worth paying for.

People pay a fortune for skate wear, I make it. Its not that hard, get a sewing machine and a pattern, a few stick on stones, no problem; anyone can follow instructions, and whats the worst that can happen? If you get it wrong it won't look right. Its not like risking your trailer electrics failing on the motorway, yet I suspect far more people would be willing to have a go at the electrics!

All the best,
Alison

I shall not argue that incompetent people should avoid touching electrics.  Merely saying that splicing a new bit of flex with 7 different coloured wires inside to another identical piece on a low voltage system is straightforward enough for a competent DIYer to do.  If the person concerned wants peace of mind then pay a sparky by all means.  As Ratty would say, shall we put this to bed?

Steve.

Hi all- thanks for all the interesting discussion (!)  Think I started something here...!

As we are unable to set the Dandy up at home, we have had to resort to splicing the wire and connecting the two ends back together using plastic connector strip- an easy enough job.  We have made it as waterproof as we can, but know that this is a temporary measure until we can get inside the Dandy to replace the whole cable.

It is a bit worrying thinking about all the "what could happen" scenarios, but hopefully this will get us to our destination so we can safely make our repair then vow to never be this stupid again!

I'll post again when we get back (if we make it back safely!) to let you all know how we got on...

Thanks again for all your replies.

Sharron
