I didn't know where to put this thread so have gone for the forum I use the most

I have a 04 Cmax and have put a towbar on it but I am unsure about the wiring, I have a straight 7 bypass and I understand it has to be used but what I need to know is;

1; Do I have to run a permanent live from the battery or can I tap into the 12v power socket in the boot?

2; There are 3 multiplugs in the boot behind the o/s facia, if I find out which one is the "towbar" one can I just tap into the wiring here rather than the wires for the lights etc? or better still does anybody know if I can buy the other half of the multiplug to put my wires in?

3; Does anybody know what the wire colours are?

I have tried Ford (loads of money) and I have also tried the cmax owners club but they didnt help much

Hi Sawnee

You should be able to get a wiring harness that plugs directly into the existing wiring loom, this will then work correctly with the other systems in the car without upsetting the CANBUS and you won't have to worry about splicing into the main loom.

Hi,the C max does not have a canbus system so have a look at this..http://www.towbarsrus.com/instructions/ZR1328A.pdf .You can buy a plug in kit but they are a bit pricey,otherwise you can splice in to the loom in the normal way. Take your +ve from the power outlet in the boot,or there should be an Orange cable with a spade connector loose on the right loom.Check that it has 12v on it and use that.It is fused at 20 A You will need to take the Lh indictators and tail light across to the right,easiest way is externally across the towbar beam.

Hi
If you do have a connector on the main loom for a towing harness you might be able to splice into all the cables in one location, spend a little time with a multi-meter to make sure that you correctly identify each wire and this should give you a neater job without having to run the cables from one side of the car to another. depending on the type of fitting you may be able to plug the individual cables into the existing connector. As Ian has already said the kits are more expensive but a whole lot easier to connect up.

I might be wrong,but I dont think there is a towing connector,I seem to remember the kit sort of piggybacks into the connectors to the lights.As I say,I might be wrong.Twice in a lifetime is enough.

Be very careful when messing with the wiring under the plastic parcel shelf sides. I had a towbar fitted the other week and the fitter, whom I've used before, pulled too hard on the wiring loom on both sides and sheared off both side curtain airbag actuator connectors! The car is going into Ford on Monday for a whole new loom at a cost of £1300! Obviously not being payed by me I might add!

Also there is a large sealing grommet that seal the wires coming from the rear lights, both of these (one either side) was also pulled out.

Just be very careful otherwise it'll be VERY costly!

Take a tip, get it done by a propper fitter, may cost but better to be safe than sorry, car wiring a bit tricky now a days, think you'll find taking a live lead from the boot is a No No. Jock
