Hi everyone,

I have been offered a nimrod nr for £100, going to see it today - does anyone have experiance of thse and would it be a good buy for a couple of years? He says he reproffed it two years ago and theres no rips/tears?,

For £100 anything waterproof and complete will be great to "test the water".

Nimrod were perfectly respectable in their day - I'd go with it!

Yup, agreed....nothing wrong with a Nimrod NR as a brand. As long as the trailer section is safe to tow (check the tyres), all the poles are there and the canvas is in good condition you can hardly go wrong for £100.

There are a couple of items listed here on Ebay atm for Nimrods...worth looking at for pictures etc.

Also quite a lot of past listings...you may need to sign in to Ebay for these. But there's 12 listings and lots of pix. Average price for one seems to be a couple of hundred pounds, which is not so much a refelction on the quality but rather that they're not that well known a brand name.

I had one of these as my Frist tt. There are a great trailer tent and are quite easy to put up. As you say only for a few years and when you sell it again you could sell it for £100 and who ever buys it will think they are getting a bargain

My first tt was a Nimrod too.  We loved it.  Because it is a hard top, the canvas is less exposed when closed - ours was quite old but the canvas was in great condition.

Definitely worth considering - as Andrew says, you may well get back what you paid when you decide to change it.

Our first TT was a Nimrod as well, we got years of service from it. You brought back some good memories.

Thanks for all the advice - glad I bought back some fond memories too.

I bought the TT yesterday for £90, and the chap is delivering it for me as we havn't yet got a towbar fitted (next job :-) )

Canvas although faded looked fine to me, all poles and awning complete, we put it up and all checks out ok. electrics all work. only thing is it has had the brakes removed, the guy said they started to lock up years ago so his father in law removed them - is this a problem? I will be towing with a Renault scenic, which I believe can tow approx 1050Kg (85%), and the trailer weighs 280-500Kg loaded?

The frame is a little rusty underneath, but i propose to rub it all down, prime and repaint white. thyres and wheels are ok, although my uncle says you should replace tyres every three-four years due to UV wear, is this right?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that you don't need brakes on a trailer that weight. Just make sure you have the correct cable on the trailer....for a braked trailer you require a breakaway cable, which in the event of a towball failure will apply the trailer brakes then part company with the towcar, allowing the trailer to come to a stop. For an unbraked trailer you require a secondary coupling (often a stout chain) which in the event of towball failure will keep the trailer attached to the car while the car brings them booth to a safe stop.

Most cars will tow a trailer tent, no problem with weight. Check things like nosewieight though. Load heavy items over the axle, not to the front of the trailer (increased noseweight, though you do need some positive pressure) or to the rear (tail wagging dog instability.) Check your payload. Some TTs are only rated for 100Kg, others more. It may be on the trailer VIN plate. Err on the side of caution given that the brakes were removed after the weight rating was assigned. Certainly don't be tempetd to exceed it.

If you're in the slightest doubt over the tyres, replace them. TT tyres should be replaced every five years or so. We had a blow out on our TT a couple of years back on the mororway and though we were all perfectly fine, the trailer needed a new wheel arch box and base repairs, and it was a long and boring afternoon getting it temporarily sorted by the motorway! Always carry a spare btw. Your RAC/AA folk won't Onward a TT they can't repair, unless it's the towcar that's at fault.

And we look forwards to some pictures. We don't have a current NR Nimrod expert on UKCS so you're officially volunteered! A few pictures of the chassis, poles, erection etc permenantly posted out there on the web somewhere would be helpful for future owners.

The Nimrod is a great trail tent we had one a few years back and took it across Europe

the breaks are very good and the tyres are easy to get and cheap (the same size as early ford fiesta)

you'll have no problems towing it they were made to be towed by a Trabant

so towing your Renault scenic no probs

(we could tow ours with our 2cv )

we may still have some instructions somewhere if drop us a line if you need them

well done you got a bargain
