What kind of stains? Mould/mildew/watermarks? Is the canvas sound ie no thin patches? Sounds like the canvas might be damaged. The other question is was it taut? Even the most well behaved canvas will leak if it collects a puddle in the middle. A couple of extra guylines at the corner poles can work wonders.
Anyway, back to the canvas. As Wongers says sometimes older canvas just needs wetted and dried on first use to reweather it, then it will be waterproof. If not though then it will need cleaned. What you use exactly depends on the type of stain but in this case it's best to use a good canvas cleaning product, NOT a detergent. Rinse it really, really well, then an extra couple of times, then dry it out and proof with a couple of coats of Fabsil.
