hi all
we have just acquired a conway conyiki 1986 model, after putting it up yesterday for it to be rained on last night we have found that the sun porch is not waterproof, the rain just seeps thru and drips on you, all the rest seems ok,it is also stained, is there any way i can wash it and how do i make it waterproof again?
thanks in advance
Gemma
hi you can get canvas cleaners from most camping shops.now as for leaking have you done the two wet test?as in wet once leave to dry wet again?if at the end it still leaks fabsil it but if you do clean it make sure you rinse very well or fabsil won't hold.
What kind of stains? Mould/mildew/watermarks? Is the canvas sound ie no thin patches? Sounds like the canvas might be damaged. The other question is was it taut? Even the most well behaved canvas will leak if it collects a puddle in the middle. A couple of extra guylines at the corner poles can work wonders.
Anyway, back to the canvas. As Wongers says sometimes older canvas just needs wetted and dried on first use to reweather it, then it will be waterproof. If not though then it will need cleaned. What you use exactly depends on the type of stain but in this case it's best to use a good canvas cleaning product, NOT a detergent. Rinse it really, really well, then an extra couple of times, then dry it out and proof with a couple of coats of Fabsil.
hi thanks for your replies, i will wait and see what its like when its rained on again as its dried out today, and will make sure its pulled taut, need to invest in some more guyropes. the marks are just dirt so nothing major.
thanks

I put a Clingon and guyline on the centre of the front arch, just to make sure the ridgeline was kept taut and to give it a little extra support if the wind picked up unexpectedly. We usually double-guy the corners, straight out and to the side.
