Obviously we have the foam mattress in the bedrooms but we find this a bit uncomfy.  Is it worthwhile getting another piece of foam to go on top of the mattress we already have or has anyone get any better (cheaper) suggestions.

Hi,

You could always get a mattress topper or even a piece of memory foam,although that option might be a bit expensive.

we use airbeds. Nice and comfy and give more room when packing.

I too use an airbed under the mattress,

  £10 from tesco. And as its under the foam mattress there is no need to insulate,but as the airbed isn't breathable you will need to prop the bed up in a morning to air it.

We recentl did 14 nights in cornwall and this worked great for us. Goodluck with whatever you decide.
