We have a large bag that attaches to the rack. It's called a Rack-Pack made by Comor. I've recently seen folding top bags for roof bars, similar idea, I bet one of them would do the job.
we had a Montana 1998-2005,we use to carry loads of stuff on it,windbreak, chairs, plastic storage boxes(those underbed type ones)clothes in a suitcase.
We had a pvc cover made which fitted over the rack and clipped around the bottom edge of the trailer with elastic cord and fittings. It just came slightly onto the trailer so it didn't obscure the number plate and lights.
Before we loaded anything we use to put a piece of breathable groundsheet down on top of the lid, this use to protect the lid and stop stuff sliding about,we then use to lay the groundsheet down inside the trailer lid so it protected the floor.

Grad Sailor - where did you get the Rack-Pack you refer to? Ive looked on the internet but they all seem to be smaller bike rack packs. The roof rack soft bags seem rather expensive - almost as much as a roof box.
If you get a cover made or use a tarp to cover the lid by a few inches, the cover is clipped under the sides by S/Steel hooks.
We placed the folded breathable groundsheet to the shape of the rack also up the sides, that stops bits coming out of the side of the rack.
used to store the awning plus poles, two fold up tables , two lafuma chairs, and other light weight gear. The cover or tarp wants to be below the lid seal a good few inches to be on the safe side, just incase it's raining on the Motorway mainly

What a good idea, we have been wondering how to pack it.
Is it a fairly heavy PVC ?
Fortunately I can make my own covers, but does any one make fitted ones commercially ?
It was quite thick,we had it made at a local company. It had eyelets in so we could fit elastic cord and then clip it down to the underside rim of the trailer.
We also had a much deeper one made which covered the entire trailer right down to the wheels which we used as a winter cover as we had to store it outside.
I think at the time it cost around £100 for both covers.
We use to leave loads of stuff in the trailer and also in the underbed storage lockers and never once had any damp or water coming in
