Hi,

I'm looking to get new tyres for our Pennine pullman as we bought it second-hand last year and I don't know how old the tyres are so thought I'd get them changed anyway before we go away again.  I'm just a bit confused as to which to buy.  The pennine website states 155 R13 Li78 and the ones currently fitted are 155/80 R13 79t which are pretty much as specified, but when I checked on the Caravan Club website, a 79t load index gives a 437kg loading per tyre. As the pullman is 900Kg this seems to be a little underspecced.

So, if there are any pullman owners (or owners of other 900kg-ish trailers) out there, what size and rating of tyre do you use?

When we had a Pennine Pullman I was very concerned about the tyres that were fitted from new purely because of the loading issue. I contacted Pennine who were happy with the tyres because that is what there tyre supplier specified. The problem hinges on the tyre regulations (see the info below from the e-tyres website).

E.T.R.O 1991 - Section 13 - Caravans and Trailers:
An increase of 10% over the load capacity quoted in the tables is permitted when tyres are fitted to caravans and light trailers with a maximum operating speed up to 100 km/h (60mph). The basic inflation pressure should be increased by 3psi/0.2 bar.

My problem was that there was nothing to physically stop me going over 60mph and also that I wasn't happy with running with tyres that were on the edge of the loading spec so I swapped them for 8ply van tyres.

Thanks for that.  I've seen some 8 ply's that have the higher loading spec.  About £10 or £12 each more I think so not too extortionate.

We had a Conway Crusader, and I had a really vicious snake after re-arranging the loading to reduce the noseweight to 60kg. There was no warning at all or instability after I set off. I was doing just 60, and there was nothing else to cause the snake. I finally got it under control a mile down the road and when the speed had dropped to 20. I've been towing for 30 years and take trailer tents all over the continent.

With hindsight I think the problem was the tyres, and it was always very noticeable how much static side sway there was on the camper when parked up without the steadies down. We got rid of it soon after, but had we kept it, I would have changed the tyres for much better rated tyres. I put better rated tyres on my current caravan. What price safety and peace of mind.

I'd agree with freeatlast, the pullman seemed more stable with the 8ply's.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm sold. If I'm going to replace them anyway I'd rather pay an extra £20-£30 for the better (and potentially safer) handling.
