We are off to Newquay area from Berkshire next weekend with our trailer tent.  Hubby is planning on using the A303 - but bearing in mind we will have children with us who at some point will needing feeding and a wee im not sure how much of a good idea this will be.

Would we be better off sticking to the motorway?

Horses for courses. In other words, it depends on what happens on the day. A couple of years ago, I skipped the motorway and arrived at the campsite in Devon at the same time as my mate & her kids - she'd been stuck in torrential rain on the M5 for hours.
It seems to me that if you use the main roads rather than motorways, stopping is always easier as there are laybys as well as cafes and small towns.

Is it easy enough to park up with a trailer at Cafes on the 303 - long time since we did it but im sure I remember there not being much except Little Chefs with pretty standard car parks.

I think we would want to avoid going into any towns on the way as its peak season at the mo.

The motorways nearly always end up in tears stupid people causing accidents then the police close it for hours. Do you have a sat nav?

Well the motorway is of course a good bit further and you are going to get held up on the m5 around bris'ol if travelling at the weekend. There are plenty of opportunities for stops on the a303.

Again you will get held up at the non dualled sections of the A303 past stonehenge and again as you cross the blackdown hills (the wild west here, no real stopping opportunities apart from laybys).

In theory as the a303 is the shorter distance the hold up opportunities must be fewer.

I'd go A303 and moan like hell for getting it wrong when I got held up.

We've just done Kent to Newquay and used the 303 route. Only point we got held up was Stonhenge. We swapped from A30 to A39 as the traffic announcements were saying there were problems after Bodmin. Sailed down. Traffic was heavier than we're used to as we usually go at the end of the holidays and always overnight, but this time we got a pitch at the beginning of the holiday, but after leaving at 2am - then we usually arrive in time for breakfast we ended up down here quite late as we had major car problems!!!

Would def avoid motorway with little ones as it's easier to stop, even if it's just a layby so they can do a quick wee.
