Im planning on making the move from a caravan to a trailer tent soon, its only me and her these days and we dont bother with tv's computers etc etc, so we might go 100% 12v with the tt, can anyone see drawbacks to this and if there are others like minded... what kind of lights do you use? and do you take a spare leisure battery?

why not have both and at least that way you can choose not to use.   If you go camping when the evenings start to chill you may feel the need for a heater, or a kettle that you can warm up quickly.

If you've been used to the flexibility and luxury of both I suggest you keep that option open. The most obvious need for 240V would be for a fridge unless you plan to go gas on that one.

Take lots of those little battery neon lights that switch by depressing the 'glass' cover and place them randomely around the tent.   A good wind-up lantern will give you central lighting for warm evenings.    I also use a gas lantern or a dual-fuel lantern which, as well as giving light also give of heat and a very satifying hissing/roar.  Many insects get toasted that way.     I also go for the Tea-light lanterns which can be hung or placed about the place.   These give out a warm gentle light which off-sets the hardness of the neons plus a little warmth.  You would be surprised at how much heat they can give out!    They can also be obtained in citronela scented for that fragant ambience.   Add to that a few cheap (and light) solar garden lanterns outside the tent and all is cosy as well as green.    Who needs EHU?    Plus you can get away from the madding (maddening?) crowds with their flickering screens.

ps, I also use a dual-fuel cooker so can be totally independent and don't forget a cheap lightweight BBQ for burning collected dead wood if site allows.

I generally go to sites without EHU & always been ok. I changed the bulbs for LED's in my old van & went away for a fortnight & everything was ok.

The old Rapido Export I have has tubes for lighting as it's missing its original lights. We went away last year without EHU & lasted all week ok. I do use a 50 watt solar panel throughout the day to top the battery up though, plus it stores nicely under the seats in the dinette area which is a plus for Rapido's as storage is limited. I've got a few solar lights I place round the awning too plus we do have a tv but to be honest it's hardly ever used as we always found plenty to do. Even if it was just sitting in the awning watching the world go by.

I have wired up 240 volt sockets etc inside the van & we have used them for the first time at the beginning of July it did make the experience a little more comfortable but I don't really miss it though.

We don't go onto EHU unless we have to, which is very rare. We have gone to sites where you pay for EHU even if you don't need it, as all the pitches have EHU. In these cases you might as well take advantage. A 12 volt and gas set up means you don't have to book, and you can go to weekend rallies with just one fully charged battery, cooker ,fridge and heater being on gas.

I have never tried going without EHU, I fancy doing it some time, after all thats how we used to do it in our first frame tent, with the camper it has all the 12v built in, water heater and fridge can run on gas...must give it a go some time...
