I'm after a sun canopy for a Cabanon Galaxy (ever hopeful) but Cabanon only do a "luxury" one for £250, which is a bit much when we don't really need it. So I was thinking about making one, I could do it for nearer to £50. I think that all I would need is the canvas( I know where I can get that) eyelets & spare poles & a bit of skill on the sewing machine. As far as I can see, I just need a measured rectangle of canvas with eyelets in the correct places to attach to existing poles & maybe some tape to tie on. Has anyone ever tried this, or does it sound like a really daft idea.
I Made an awning for my first caravan out of a large ex scout troop ridge tent. worked a treat,I sewed it using a domestic sewing machine, you just need heavey duty needles.
Leather or Denim needles will be your best bet and as long as your machine has a strong motor on it u should be fine make sure u use aluminium eyelets so they dont rust

Hey, great link! I`ve been wondering if this was possible for ages...I`ve got several scavenged poles downstairs.
And sewing canvas can`t be tougher than sewing denim, especially if there are few overlapping seams. A domestic sewing machine should be fine...or use an old treadle machine. They can get through anything.
I had the sun canopy made up for me by TVS in Bolton. As my machine was playing up. If you have an older sewing machine which is heavy then you shouldn't have any trouble running it up. Just a tip the reinforcements at the corner where the eyelets are need to be larger to take the strain. I have put extra canvas on ours as they came away from the eyelets, and I managed to do this on Singer sewing machine of 1970's vintage. I used a needle for denim on the machine. The repair was fine. Have also used the machine to make repairs on other trailer tents we have had. Good luck
the tip about the reinforced eyelets are will be invaluable I'm sure, not something I would have thought about possibly until I heard a ripping sound. I can't wait to get started now, as I've tracked down some canvas in the exact colour. At least I have all winter & possibly a lot longer before I need to use the canopy.
its the tent twill T#7, I got a couple of samples & while I'm not sure that the quality is quite as good as Cabanon's, it's pretty close. I tested it for waterproofness & it is, but I am only using it for a sun canopy (not a rain shelter). I was quite impressed & the colour is perfect for what I want.
