We have a pennine pathfinder. We have just been to the south of france with it. Whilst there the water heater  stopped working. It worked ok on the gas setting but would not work on electric. We have never had any problems before. Any ideas aas to what may be wrong? We are not very technical!!!

I am a Crusader man, but know from reading discussions on the COC that your electric element has probably gone. Assume it is the Ultrastore heater. New elements easily obtained from caravan shops (expensive) or look on line.

Hi, look around the back of the heater or follow the heater wires until you find a spade connector (i.e. joint to camper electrics) pull apart and reconnect very often its just a poor connection.  BRY.

SNAP   same thing happend to us this weekend and we too were camping in France the last time it worked!!!    Not sure what is wrong at all and if it is a heater issue or a water issue as we struggled to get any flow using the hot water tap and got no heat at all.   Did not try on gas.

When putting on the hot water tap there is a lot of spluttering which we know happens when you are first drawing through to the tank, but this spluttering remained every time we tried to use the hot taps and we never got any hot water at all.

We did try drawing through the bathroom and the kitchen sinks at the same time, just in case there was an airlock but nothing helped.

Any ideas please?  Ours is a 2003 pathfinder.

Hi Andcow

I've got exactly the same problem as you. Hot water splutters whilst the tank fills up, then if you leave it for 5 minutes or so you'll get warm water that flows fine. Leave it for 1/2 hour though and you get spluttery cold water again.

Unfortunately I haven't solved this yet. I do know that it's not the drain valve, as I put a bucket under the outlet last time we were away and there were no leaks.

I suspect that the hot water is draining back into the aquaroll. I did notice last time that the pipe running from the aquaroll to the connector felt hot. We're going away again in a couple of days, so this time I'm going to fill the hot water tank, switch the heater on, then take the pump out the aquaroll and put it in an empty bucket, that should reveal if anything is going back down again. If that is the case, then there must be a one-way valve somewhere that has failed. God knows where though.

let me know please if that works.  We checked all connections and did not think it was the element in the water heater since the taps kept reverting back to spluttering.  Did try getting out any airlocks but did not think of anything draining back out!

If it is the problem for you we will have a check ourselves on our next camp which won't be for a few weeks now.

If we come across any other ways to fix will let you know too.

Good luck

We have just replaced the Carver2 water filter housing as it cracked during the winter. When we put the new one in we had problems with the hot water, i.e. we did not have any. The cold water worked fine.  After a few attempts to get it working my husband manually worked the non return valve in and out a number of times.  This seems to have fixed the problem.  May be worth checking if the non return valve is stuck and not letting water into the hot water tank.

*BUMP*

OK I'm back from holiday now. Here's what I tried.

Filled up the aquaroll, ran the hot tap until the hot tank filled and switched it on. Left it 10 mins or so and warm water with no spluttering. Then took the pump out of the aquaroll and into a bucket and lo and behold a steady trickle of warm water coming out of the pump.

I took apart the pipes that are tank-side of the drain valve, and could see nothing wrong with them. The drain valve itself is also not leaking. Anything further than that though I was not confident to attempt, as we were on site with the minimum of tools.

So I presume that there is another non-return valve somewhere between the socket on the side of the camper and the drain valve. Anyone know where it is?
