,We have just returned from our hols in Poole, we have a Rapido folding caravan , did all the checks before going ,tyre pressure ok , tread ok general condition of both tyres ok ,about 5 miles from our site one of the tyres shredded no problem only going slow, lucky we were right by a restaurant car park, so changed tyre for spare, we were concerned why a good quality tyre should shred as all looked ok . We went for new tyre to Nationwide Tyres Poole (very helpful and recommended) the fitter looked at the tyre which was a premium make and informed us that they all had date stamps on them and that our tyre was about 20 yrs, old( we purchased the Rapido second hand about 3 yrs.ago) and that the tyre had probably perished from the inside, he said that all caravan tyres should be changed at least every 5 years, never knew this , a lesson well learned. You're not alone there. I dread to think of the potential danger many caravanners and occasional motorhome users are risking. So many people just check the tread, but ignore the date on the tyres.

We had an incident similar to yours on the motorway coming home from the Portsmouth ferry a couple of years ago. No damage done but we changed all the other  tyres for new ones too when we got home! I checked back with the previous owner of the TT (a friend) and she said she'd only ever changed tyres when one got worn. The TT was 19 years old by that point, argh.

So I know now and so do you now! But I suspect there's a lot more people who don't which is why posts like this are good to see.

Had same problem. My 11 yr old Crusader had never had new tyres, so I fitted 8 ply van tyres which are much better than a car tyre. Not sure about TT wheel sizes but for FCs they are brilliant.

I've had this happen to me twice now once was on a caravan (not mine I have to add) & once on my Rapido, I too have changed the tyres for 8 ply. Both times the tyres went on a dual carriageway. I even had to get the police out to slow the traffic down so I could change the tyre the first time it happened the next time it happened I managed to pull off & change it ok.
