Hi. I am usually found lurking around in the "Camping under Canvas" section but I think you Guys might be able to help me. I have a small camping trailer 5'x3' with 20" sides. It has 8" wheels and I intend taking it down to the South of France behind my heavily ladened Saab Aero Estate. My questions are A) at what speed am I allowed to travel on the Autoroutes? and will I have to pay extra because I have a small trailer?

Many Thanks

Bert.

You can travel at the same speed as a car on roads and no, you only pay extra if over 2metres.

Bear in mind your 8 inch wheels and tyres are probably only rated for 60mph.  You need to check the actual tyre markings, but that's probably your speed limit.

Small wheels travel at much greater rpm than large ones.

I am down in Perpignan at the moment. Took a week to tow my Raclet Jasmin down here with a couple of stops on the way. I'm not sure if I paid more on the peage due to having trailer on. The Jasmin is a lot longer than the trailer you are talking about at around 3.75M with the kitchen on.

I set my cruise control at 70MPH and was over taken by many French drivers doing closer to the 80MPH (130KPH) with similar size trailers to you. I'm not saying that that makes it right but the French seem to be driving at those speed with small trailers on.

Hope you have a good holiday.

Come on in the Med is fine.

each country have their own rules/ speed limits when towing Netherlands was very slow then in Belgium wee could put our foot down as long as we avoided the potholes in the Mway!

Would not have, as it goes by height.

Many Thanks for all advice. Will set CC at 65mph and sit back and watch the countryside roll by. Car has 260bhp on tap so I expect it to be quite frustrating, might improve fuel consumption a bit though!

Cheers,

Bert
