we currently own a montana 6 and really love it, however we are thinking of upgrading to either a folding camper or caravan but cannot make our minds up.  We love the freedom of camping under canvas but would like a little more comfort now we are in our mid forties with two children in tow ( sorry for the pun!)  .. any advice???

There have been many debates on this subject and it is basically down to your wants.  A folding camper will semm luxurious compared to a tent.  You will also enjoy the feeling of being under canvas.

When we changed from fc to caravan the main advanteges were being able to pop into the caravan on the drive to load it, clean it etc.  Being able to pull over easily into a layby for a rest or sleep.

Originally we spent a couple of years in a caravan but I really didn't like the hassle of towing and storing it. We then camped most of the last 10/15 or so years (still got tents) but wanted a little more comfort, hence the FC.
They are so quick to put up and an overnight stop is no problem. Again, it's much easier to store than a caravan.
The only downside is if the camper is taken down wet, you have to dry the canvas out ASAP, but you would have to do that with a tent anyway.
We've only had ours a few weeks and it's a fantastic piece of kit, we should have got one years ago!

My vote is a Folding Camper.

We have never had a caravan, only our beloved camper. It's a breeze to tow. I like the fact that you can camp in the tent field or the caravan field - we prefer the tent field. The only downside is that you have to open it up each time you want to put something in or take something out or give it a spring clean whereas with a caravan you can just open the door. I do quite fancy a caravan for this very reason but certainly don't like the idea of towing one or camping in the regimented rows of ugly caravans at a campsite.

It's a tough choice.

We went from tent, to folding camper, to folding caravan, to caravan. All of them had their good bits and we enjoyed them all, but at the end of the day at the moment the caravan suits us better, it really is a personal thing and not really a choice anyone can make for you.

Good luck!

We havnt had a FC we went from tent to caravan, I loved the tent but have to say a caravan is the right choice for us, warm and dry can pull up in site and if it's wet just unhitch level and in you go no poles or pegs to deal with ( unless you use an awning) with a cuppa :)
But what is right for one may not be right for someone else it is a personal choice only you can decide really , read up do your homework and you will get a feeling of which would be the right choice for you.
Good luck in your decision :)

We went from TT (which we only used 4 times) to FC for more comfort.  We had 2 great years with the FC then went to caravan.  Now had a caravan for 5 years and that's our favoured unit by far.

I've just got myself a Combi Camp (so really back to basics) so I can get away by myself whenever I want.  Won't be getting rid of the caravan though

I'm sure you will suddenly find the right unit, be it FC or caravan and you will know that's the one for you.

Good luck with your decision!

We have a TT. When we retired we decided to get a caravan so we could just pop away for a couple of days without worrying about the weather and also early and late season. They offered us so little for the TT that we decided to hang on to it and use it for our annual trip to the S of France, because there is nothing quite as excellent as being under proper canvas when it is hot.

We had a montana and sold it a few months ago, having bought our new Pennine Crusader platinium.  Loved the tent for space but injuries have been catching up on me so the choice was caravan or FC or Convertible caravan as its called.

We worked out what we needed and what both units offered.  We included costs and storage considerations and the result was for us a Convertible Caravan.   I still would like a caravan but clearly from reading some members posts, it appears that most have issues with towing and cost of towing and storage.  I have no issue on either being a HGV Class 1, and cost of fuel for me is 58 p with LPG and we can park in garage or on driveway.  SO it remains for you to decide, based on your personal circumstances, think hard and decide wisely.

If you go for CC or TT or FC it will improve your camping experience.  If your montana is in good condition and you have extras you can get around 500 on ebay if you sell at the right time.

If you want to have a look at CC search under 'platinum crusader 2010'.  They are expensive new but with vat increase soon it could work out good to buy early.  Also recommend the awning

since you love your tent but want a little more comfort a FC would be the obvious answer at this stage.   Remember whatever you choose you are not stuck with forever.  You will be towing quite a weight with a caravan big enough for a family of 4 though a FC will be lighter and give more room!   YOu can always go caravan when the kids refuse to come with you anymore  (usually from about 17 onwards)
