We have just returned from 2 wks camping in France and cannot wait to return, however we were pitched on a slope and had awful sleep. In a bid to prevent having to sleep like this again we are now looking into trailer tents for a more level & comfortable sleeping option, but still be 'camping'.

Can youtell me pros's and cons and comparisons to tents as in set up/packing away, beds, levelling ability, good trailer tents etc ,stockists... basically any advice with regards to having/using one to help our decision.

Hi Nat

We have a Dandy so I am slightly biased!

We have 2 double beds and a decent child sized single in our "tent". The main advantages being: -

You are sleeping on raised beds off the floor

The fabric of our Dandy is double skinned/insulated PVC so its warm and dry - rain just bounces off. Warm in winter, cool in summer.

Can be folded up wet - won't rot and water doesn't penetrate the PVC.

The main unit can be erected in 10 - 15 mins approx and requires no pegging out. The awning in opitional so doesn't have to be put up at every campsite.

We have water, sink and gas cooking facilities inside the main unit.

The single bed and one of the doubles convert to seating and there are ample storage units for cooking utensils, bedding and other bits and pieces.

Water, waste and gas are easily connected within a matter of minutes and store easily inside the ubit when in transit.

It is a compact unit and incredibly easy to tow.

We have just returned from France and covered over 2500 miles round trip, Provence, Narbonne, Dordogne etc...

Our unit gives us the flexibility we need when touring.

Hope this helps...........

Ooh thanks for that, and in terms of levelling....are you able to level up trailer tents to ensure you are sleeping level & not sloped as we spent the last 2 wks!

Within reason you can cope with some degree of slope. The classic design of TT, where the beds unfold from the trailer as two "wings" can cope with more slope than the type where the lid of the trailer acts as part of the floor. I have a classic design Conway and I don't think I can cope with more than perhaps a foot of drop along the length of the trailer, from tow hitch to front legs. Given that this is about 8 feet long, then a 10-12% slope on the front to back of the cabin? The awning and ridge line will look a bit messy on this sort of slope but at least the upper bed areas will be level.

Hi,
I recently sold a trailer tent (sunncamp 400)we had used it for about 4 years.
we were fed up with having to take the kitchen off the back and lifting it (its quite heavy)and we are not getting any younger!also the awning is 4 metres long and took forever to put up.
we bought a Folding camper,a Conway countryman 2002 off of Ebay,I have just come back from 3.5 weeks holiday in it and can't praise it enough,an excellent buy,we paid £2,450 for it and it is well worth it,in 2005 when we bought the sunncamp it cost us almost £2000,If you look hard enough you will get a bargain off ebay as we did, not every person is a con man, we took a chance and are well happy.
good luck with whatever you decide to do.Happy Camping!

Ps
you can buy levellers that will solve the problem you had,
just use your car to roll the tent/camper onto them.they cost about £25.00 a pair.

We moved from a large (new) Wynnster Tent to an old Trailer Tent (from Preloved), and we love it. You can level out the sleeping areas with relative ease, and we got wheels chocks to lift the trailer if necessary.

We would recommend the change...

You can position the Dandy so that the wheels are level and you can adjust the unit up or downwards to level it out, within reason. Also, you can pitch on hardstanding.
