We've had the FC a year now and something has been bothering me since we got it.  Having never towed a trailer before, I'm not sure if this is normal or not.  When pulling away from a stop, as we move there is a slight "bump" sort of noise.  The smoother the take off, the less likely it is to happen but it occurs a lot.  Is this normal or are my brakes locked on?

sounds like the piston which controls the trailer brakes is moving back to the brakes of posion not sure about yours some have a rubber stop so it won't bang.

Possibly the overrun damper in the coupling is weak due to age/fault/miss fitting.

edit: oops! more or less what wongers said above.

I used to get that when I towed my nearly new Fiesta with my 1.4 MG - don't get it with the Pullman and the big 3.2 Frontera - I just used to put it down to the weight and the smallish car - as it was pretty much at the top end of it's limits.

It may be worth just checking the damper. Especially if the camper wasn't purchased new.

I purchased a caravan where the previous owner had removed his ALKO stabaliser hitch and refitted the standard coupling head, but had failed to make sure the damper was reattached. This resulted in a knock when moving away.

A good damper should allow you to compress the coupling with a fair amout of force, but it should only fully compress over a period of several seconds, and take the same amount of time to return to its original position once released. If the damper is shot, it will compress very quickly and spring back to its original position almost instantly once released.

If the after compressing the coupling, it just slides back and forth clunking then the it probably isn't attached.

I tried the damper action as suggested and it will go in with some force and then it returns with a slow smooth action. I guess Ange/Kev's suggestion was probably correct.

our f/c used to do that from brand new we just thought it was normal until we had it serviced and was told the brakes had never been set properly in the first place so i would get it checked out
