I have boasted before about how easy the Conway Cruiser is to set up on my own. But this has come at a price.
Getting ready for a few days away we opened the camper up to put in our things and I opened it up by myself. Then I nearly cried when I saw one of the bed slide rails sticking out of the canvas.
My wife was very understanding, no swearing or shouting, with only hours to go until our holiday and the kids being... well kids. She got out the needle and thread (very tough needle and very strong thread) she did a cracking temp repair until we can get a better job done.
So, onto the warning. I have opened up our camper several times solo and never done this and just this afternoon me and the wife were taking great care when opening it again and it appears that if both sides are pulled at the same time then the fabric all goes up together and then the lower, heavily reinforced part of the canvas is pulled up over the ends of the beds. But if only one side is pulled up then the roof doesn't go up high enough and then the ends of the bed are pushing against the single thickness canvas and, as we found out, its all to easy to keep pulling and put the rail through. We tried it both ways being very slow and careful and have now realised.
So, either make sure both sides go out together, or if doing it solo make sure you also pull the fabric UP so the thicker protected part is up before you fully pull out the beds. Here endeth the lesson.
I've never heard of that method. I always thought you pulled the rear section out first, then the front. The opposite when packing up. This was always Conway's instructions. I've never tried lifting both ends at once!!
I "fluff up" the canvas before pulling out the ends and never have trouble. Am I missing something in your message?
We do the 'fluff up' method, also in the instruction manual. Have used the camper dozens of times and this is the only time we have had an 'incident'. When showing my wife how I did it we could both see that when only one end was pulled up the canvas didn't pull up fully. But now we know its possible we are going to be extra vigilant when looking out for this.
Shame the double thickness part of the canvas was not 3 inches higher.
Luckily its a late 90's model and not a 'new' camper and far from mint, but still not a great start to the holiday. But my wife has done a brilliant repair and I think just an liberal coating of fabsil could be all it needs now.
I admit I've seen units for sale on Ebay sometimes and you can see heavy repair stitching on the corners where they've probably experienced your problem. I'll take care in the future as I can't sew very well!!!
Well I do one end then the other and never had a problem, as long as you make sure the canvas is tucked up out the way and not hanging the corners of the beds its fine, Im sure this is the way conway tell you to open them??
