Hi Jacqui.
I expect you have solved your problem by now, I have just registered with ukcampsite. I have a Creighton Binns Comfort. I assume you were refering to the hinged, steel tube with two straps under the matress. If so, then it is there to create a settee, one of the matresses has a plywood sheet inside the fabric cover, this can be lent against the steel tube to create the backrest.
