Happy new year to everyone,we are thinking about going to jersey with our pennine sterling and was wondering if we need to book on site as a trailer tent or a caravan, also about the permits we need to move from ferry to site.we are new to folding campersand any information would be greatful.
Hi i would phone the site and tell them you have a folding camper same with the ferry company just in case and mention if you have an awning when booking the campsite also have the measurement to hand
An article in last month's C&CC mag says that "tents, trailer tents and camping trailers" do not need a permit but "large solid sided folding camper owners should check and perhaps organise a caravan permit just in case." As the campsite (or travel organisation such as Carefree) has to organise the permit for you it looks as if antonycapp's suggestion to contact the site would seem to be a good idea.
Just to add to my earlier post, when in doubt I usually work on the jobsworth principle. If you've got a permit and aren't asked for it you haven't lost anything but if you get some official demanding it and you haven't got one it would be a hassle. I seem to remember the Jersey States website says something about "predominantly canvas sided" don't need it, or words to that effect but I've never actually tested it as we decided not to go in the end on that occasion. I think the permits are purely so they can count the caravans in and count them out to make sure that Jersey doesn't fill up with caravans, and to limit the number on Jersey at any one time to the number of pitches there are.
On your other question re number of sites, I haven't looked but I would have thought Jersey would have more than just three as it's more popular and larger than Guernsey and they have at least three, though as the caravan thing is quite new perhaps there are only three that take caravans?
We went to jersey with a pennine folding camper several years ago,we did not have a permit. The year we went was the first year that they allowed caravans.
