Help!!!!!!!!!

We bought a pennine fiesta camper 2001 about 18 months ago. The camper was in perfect condition only ever been used a couple of times when it was new, but had been left unused in storage for about 6 years. The only problem we have is that the camper has always smelt musty and it is quite a strong smell, we have tried using fabreeze and air freshners etc but the smell is always back quite quickly, does anyone else have similar experiences with their campers or any tips on getting rid of the smell?? ( The camper has no signs of damp)

Thanks Louise

I had a problem with a smell in a static caravan once.  A cat had got in while the site were doing a repair and marked its territory.  I tried everything and the only thing that worked was Neutradol.  You can get it in a spray but I would get the solid one and leave it open inside even when the camper is folded.

Was it kept in a garage or completely covered for the 6 years or outside with just the transit cover? Have you checked the walls and floor for soft spots or used a damp metre.

I think it was kept outside with the transit cover but we have used it 6 or 7 times and never noticed any damp, mould/mildew or soft patches. We have not used a damp metre on it though.

Will try the neutradol thanks.

Also worth scattering 3 or 4 tumble dryer sheets inside the camper before you pack it away.

PLease have a look at my previous postings under "smell from bedboards".

The 2001 fiestas were prone  to this. If its the same smell as I had its due to the factory using a sanitary wash on the bedboards. The one I had was particulary bad. You can get some temporary respite washing the boards with Zoflora. However it will come back, oddly in cold and damp weather - with a vengance in my case.

I eventually replaced the boards. You can get ready cut and framed boards from Pennine or cut them yourself. Time consuming but not a complicated job.

Anyhow its all on my previous postings.

On the positive side your's may just be due to it being unused for such a long period of time in which case it should go away with use. Good luck and if you need any tips about replacing the boards please ask.

Try packing it away with tumble dryer sheets. If it smells of dead milk it will be the bed boards. If it smells "old" fresh air and sun should help.

Thanks everyone for the replys you have been very helpfull, I think that maybe it is the bed boards as all summer long last year i was constantly trying to sniff out the problem and thought it was coming from the bed area but the cushions smelt fine!

We are going to try the pva glue on the boards to start with and if that doesn't work we will look at replacing them! Will also try the tumble dryer sheets and neutradol when we get the camper out for its BIG pre season clean as any thing is worth a bash!!!

Thanks once again Louise
