Hi I have just purchased a folding camper. We don't have a garage so want to cover it with something to protect it from the elements. I've looked at kampa winter covers but they seem little pricey. Are the really much better than a heavy duty tarpaulin? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

They might be a little expensive, but well up to the job

a decent tarp will do the job as long as its well covered and strapped down. make sure that all the vulnerable areas are covered. buy a tarp thats a bit bigger than your camper so you can fold it around and get everything covered up.

I use both on my Crusader. Kampa on top of Tarp.

Below is a pennine cover on ebay at £70 one day to go.

A proper winter cover is made of breathable material, where as tarpaulin isn't. I'm not sure if using a material that isn't breathable will cause any problems. Someone maybe able to answer this.

ok here we go again

yes the winter covers are breathable but not waterproof so you still have to have your transit cover on aswell which as far as i know are not breathable.now i have a winter cover but if i had known they are not waterproof maybe i would not have.

in the end i have now built a frame that goes over the camper which is covered in a waterproof cover,then i have the winter cover straight on top of camper.

The breathable cover on my trailer tent is definately water proof. It allows moisture to escape, but doesnt let rain water through. Ive taken it off when it has been saturated, and there is never water on the transit cover.

if you have a kampa cover which seem the most common,the kampa do not say waterproof only highly water resistant if you have another make can you post which as would be intrested.

No its the Kampa one I have. I took it off the other day and despite being covered by 18 inch of snow the other month and out in the rain all winter, everything underneath was bone dry. Really happy with it.

This cannot be a 'Kampa' breathable cover, unless you have been lucky, as mine (only bought last October, about £100) lets heavy rain through so I have the tarpaulin covering the whole camper as the transit cover only waterproofs the top. I complained to Kampa and they said it is not waterporoof and I must also use the transit cover. I use the Kampa cover to hold the tarp in place and make it look tidy.
I opened my camper yesterday to check it and it was perfect. No damp or condensation anywhere.
The Kampa is ok without the tarp if you are not bothered about the camper sides.

The sides of older campers like mine 1998 Crusader and probably newer ones are vunerable to water getting into the seals of vents for the fridge, the door, toilet door, electric and water fixings and where the side walls are fitted to the bottom by an aluminium strip.
I had never had a camper before and bought mine cheap last year not checking it properly. I had to replace both side walls, the door and the toilet box door. Water had got in to these areas and rotted the walls. I have made sure all these things are sealed with the correct products now that the camper is solid. Having done this myself for about £300 I am making sure the sides have the tarp covering them. Belt and braces. I know the 'Kampa' will probably keep most of the water off, just making sure.
In the summer I will probably just use the 'Kampa'
