Having just recovered my recently stolen Penine Sterling Folding Caravan ( 1995) from the police ( it was nicked three weeks ago and I would like to thank anybody out there who offered sympathy and advice ) I am in the market to buy some reasonable insurance cover. Anybody know some good insurance companys/deals relating to these vehicles.
Glad to hear the good news, hope it wasn't damaged. Ours is also with the C&CC-just looking round for car insurance & they seem cheapest for that as well !! Will save more than 2 years C&CC membership in 1 years car insurance !!
Alan, just saw your post above-we were out in ours in the lakes last weekend. It was absolutely blooming freezing on Saturday night. However we had a oil filled radiator (500 watt,I think) on all the time & one of those Halogen heaters (800) watt while we were up & about,(didn't want to risk it on when we were asleep/not there), & we were warm enough to sit around in longsleeve t shirts & thin long pants. To be honest once in my sleeping bag I was really comfy, & had one of the best nights sleep ever. According to the weather forecast it was going to be between 1-3 degrees (it certainly felt like it) . We are considering a fanheater as well (instead of the halogen heater) as it may be more wide spread heat & not as bright, but if you are thinking about it-get out & try it- I know we enjoyed our "minibreak".
Result on getting your folder back. We had ours insured with HHH which has been taken over. As Rizzo says Bakers have taken on the job now. I guess you will now also be sorting out some decent security. An insurance aproved, e.g.sold secure, hitch lock and wheelclamp should be on your shopping list as well.
We took it out in february ( literally freezing!) with a fan heater kept it on 1kw while we were up and were warm enough.Took electric blankets woke up at three boiling! and had to turn them off. Its the early evenings rather than the cold we don't like
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
Thanks to JAN P, Bernard, Mark N, Rizzo for the advice on insurance and folding camping in the winter. Security is certainly top of my agenda now.
The van was nicked whilst I was out of the house one afternoon for 40 minutes! I had to go and collect the mother-in-law from the station and when I came back .... nothing. I don't get on too well with the mother-in- law so it was a bit of a double whammy!!! LOts of .. 'I told you so' from mother-in-law, wife, three daughters... not enough security etc.It was time to retreat to the potting shed ... except we haven't got one! .... have to make do with outside Victorian privvy for quiet reflection.............
Surprisingly the folding caravan appears in the same condition as it was before the theft. It was merely stored. Obvious lock damage to the hitch where it was sawn off. Apart from that...OK
Bernard..... where did you get your oil filled radiator from? Sounds the business
Hi again Alan, glad you got it back "safe & sound" so to speak-we got our oil filled radiator from argos-( cat no. 415/7605 pg 702) however having looked at it again the 800 watt one might be better 1/2 as warm again for another £10. We got this as it is compact (easy to step over etc in t' camper), but the other isn't much bigger-ho hum just add it to list of minor errors ! Speaking of which we decided to take up camping as a "cheap" way of getting a weekend away-we could probably have 50% shares in the Hilton chain by now with our visits to various camping shops etc !! Still not moaning- just looking forward to next excursion, looking at the weather it might just be a bit cold this weekend so will stay snuggled up with a couple of bottles of "Old Peculier" tonight & contribute to the "Ramsbottom Licenced Victuallers Pension Fund" tomorrow, see you all soon (possibly) & have a good weekend
Thanks for the proceless bits of information. I can't think of a more pleasurable experience right now than being tucked up in a warm sleeping bag warmed by an oil heater in the folding camper and an old peculiar for company ....................wait for it .. I can hear the string tones of the Hamlet cigar advert in the background.....
Seriously I will be having a word with the wife and see if the Xmas list can stretch to 800w heater. I wonder if I can ask for 5% VAT only on the sales...just a thought!
